Not knowing what Goulding's rates are these days, it's hard to know what to recommend!

We were at Monument Valley about three years ago and I don't believe there is anyplace else to stay but Gouldings. I don't remember the rate but I don't recall that it was super expensive. It may have gone up by now or maybe since it was the only place to stay, I knew it couldn't be an issue. There is almost nothing around there BUT Gouldings, a gas station, grocery store and Monument Valley. And I don't think there was hardly anything else to choose from within quite a few miles of that area either. It was a nice place and you can't beat the view.

When we visited 10 years ago we approached from the Four Corners area and stayed in an admittedly nondescript but adequate motel in a little place called Mexican Hat, just over the state line in Utah. I remember it chiefly for a sign posted on the inside of our room door asking guests not to use the bath towel to wash their cars. That was when I realised that this was not a class place - but for one night it did the trick. Memory fades, but I think it wasn't much more than a half-hour run to Monument Valley (happy to be corrected on that though). There was also only one place to eat, a small steakhouse.

coro, on second thoughts I'm not sure that I interpreted your post title correctly - i.e. whether you meant "moderately pricey" or "moderately priced". Whatever, as I'm sure you realise our motel fell into the "cheap" category.

Thank you everybody.
I think I'll consider Anasazi Inn in Tsegi (37 miles away from MV), while in the morning we'll be heading South to catch our flight in Phoenix. I hope US 160 is not too bad night time...

We stayed in the Hampton Inn in Kayenta four years ago when we went to MV. We had the same budget issues and it had reasonable rates. Kayenta is about 30 minutes from MV and also has a Holiday Inn and Best Western.

I chuckled at your question! In these areas, there isn't much. As Jet said, it's pretty bleak and you can't do better than Goulding's. It's a real historic place(not the motel part) where ALL the cast/crews stayed while working on movies filmed in that area. You have to realize that in Indian areas the accomodations are not first rate, the food is mediocre, but that is part of the fun, Navajo Tacos, etc....You just cannot beat Goulding's if you want to stay close to MV....Kayenta is definitely not much of a town, though the motels are newer, they have no atmosphere and the available restaurants are not much at all.

The Anasasi Inn is very nice. My husband and I found it to be a good alternative to the more expensive hotels near Monument Valley.

Hi Coro, i've read your other posts and your trip sounds wonderful. It would make it even MORE spectacular by staying at Gouldings.

Believe me, budget is always key on our long road trips as they're usually 21- 26 nights and the cost of hotels adds up quickly! (no camping for us) Having said that, Gouldings is one of those special places that is worth a little extra, not because of decor or amenities, but because of location. (location location location!) You simply won't find such a similar, spectacular setting anywhere else in the world! Watching the sunset and sunrise on our private balcony in the MIDDLE of monument valley was priceLESS.

One year we stayed at the Holiday Inn in Kayenta and while fine, it was a Holiday Inn on a fairly busy street in a little town. Been there done that a a bazillion times.

Happy to say we got in Gouldings again for this sumemrs trip. If you stay there, i think you'll be delighted as well.

The Anasazi Inn in Kayenta is very nice & is definitely much better than Mexican Hat. The restaurant is very good for breakfast & dinner & if you call the desk early on the morning you depart for MV, you can order a very nice & cheap box lunch to take with you.

Also, the Anaaszi has it's own little canyon to watch sunsets/sunrises! Admittedly not as spectacular as Monument Valley, but it's pretty. It was clean, comfortable, and even had a microwave and refigerator. I think that it's a very good choice.

I totally concur with Ellen's comments about watching the sunrise from the balcony. That alone is worth the price of a room at Goulding's! The sight is, in fact, priceless.

I thought Gouldings was overpriced and not worth it. If I had it all to do over again I would not have stayed overnight in Monument Valley at all. The area can be easily seen in a half-day visit. I would stay overnight there only if I did not have to retrace my steps, i.e. if I was driving from Kayenta to Utah, or vice versa.

Goolding's rates are:

Jan 01 - Mar 14, 2006 73
Mar 15 - Mar 30, 2006: 118
Apr 01 - May 31, 2006: 145
Jun 01 - Oct 15, 2006: 170
Oct 16 - Nov 15, 2006: 118
Nov 16 - Dec 31, 2006: 83

I was there with a budget tour "Cosmos" off-season, loved the place! Perfect location.

I wonder what will happen if one'd try to Priceline Goulding?

Faina, unless you're talking about off- off-season, forget it. Goulding's sells out during the popular seasons.

When your trip is over and you look back on your memories and photos, you will not miss the extra $100 or so (if it's that much, even)you paid for a room at Goulding's. You will remember that there was no better location to view the famous Monument Valley silhouette of mesa's and butte, etc. on the horizon, especially as you greet the sunrise sipping a cup of coffee sitting there on your room's balcony. It's also an interesting and relaxing place to browse around and learn about the history of Harry Goulding. There's other places to stay at less cost but in my DW and my humble opinion, if you can get a room at Gouldings, you won't regret spending the extra bucks.

Just received this email response from Anasazi Inn--
"Our rate for the summer is 59.95 single and 69.95 double, The tax rate is 17.05%, Our motel and restaurant is open 24 hrs.Credit card will guarantee reservation on the day of arrival".

So it is about half the price of Gouldings. I still can't decide.
