You don't to get to the gate super early with Southwest anymore. If you have A30-33, you can get in line there right before that group boards, stepping right in front of the person with A34. 30 minutes minimum before boarding is probably the safest best; an hour is not really required anymore, something in between is what I usually shoot for. Sometimes Southwest won't board til 20 minutes before departure - all depends.

Well, I just have to say that I will definitely fly Southwest again. Very organized and the amount of time we spent at the gate deplaning etc. was minimal. The turn around time was quick and efficient. Only complaint would be that the ticket agents at the counter weren't all that friendly--actually they weren't friendly at all. I over heard one say to another after they had pointed out which way to exit to the gates to several passengers, "Can't they just read the EXIT sign?!" Well, maybe the agents are familiar with where the signs are but most travelers don't automatically notice a sign right away.

I just flew Southwest from west coast to east. I did encounter one not-so-friendly gate agent in Phoenix, but the flight attendants on both of my flights were very helpful and friendly.
I was disappointed when I tried to change my flight after I'd checked in for my original that due to a problem with their website, I had to give up my A20 boarding position (obtained by checking in exactly 24 hours before departure) to make the change - except after I gave up my boarding pass, the website gave me an "unknown error" and I could not make the change. I had to keep my original flight. But I lost my boarding position! I wound up with B41, which totally pissed me off. I got the last aisle seat on the plane; had I wound up in a middle seat, I would have been extremely upset. I mentioned this ahead of time to the aforementioned gate agent in Phoenix that this had happened and he gave me an unsympathetic shrug and said there was nothing he could do about it (not true - he could let anyone on the plane he wanted in any order) and that was that.
