"I have been assured by an associate at JPL that you can expect more June Gloom" Are you serious here_today_Gone2Maui? I can't tell you how many times the weatherman has "assured" me something only to have ...well you know the rest. For the most part, they're throwing darts beyond 2-3 days.

Do a search on Pacific Decadal Oscillation.

Living in SoCal for the past 40 some years I am already quite familair with regular El Niño weather patterns. This particular pattern is similar to the El Niño-La Niña pattern, but it has a longer cycle.

Since my friend at JPL is, well, a rocket scientist, and not prone to repeat pop science, I tend to listen to him when he shares interesting info that comes out of JPL. He's not talking about daily weather reports, but cyclical climate patterns.
