What is area around Andy Warhol museum like?
A friend's daughter and her friend (25 yrs old - single) are looking at an apt near the Warhol museum - it is an old school that has been converted into apts. She has seen this on the internet. Can anyone provide any insight as to either the neighborhood or specifically the apts? She lives in Georgia and is trying to screen these places before coming up

Thanks
Judging from one visit to the museum - on foot from downtown Pittsburg - a couple of years ago, it could be described as gritty. The museum has brought in some upscale businesses, but overall it seemed very working class and not a great location for a 25 year old single woman.

As a former Pittsburgher who is familiar with this area, I would say that it is relatively safe, crimewise, and will only improve in the future. The museum is located in a former industrial warehouse/business area midway between the new Alcoa Aluminum corporate headquarters building and PNC Park, the new home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The close proximity to PNC Park (a couple of short blocks) should ensure that the area will only improve with the influx of new businesses and visitors.

is it by Allegheny General Hospital?....on the corner of James Street and North St.?..there are people who work at the hospital who live there....it is quite convenient....not a real good place to be out and about late at night..but I would say safe enough inside your home.....

it is the Schoolhouse apts by AG Hospital...the AWM is about 4 blocks away by Allegheny Center Mall(not to much left in there any more).there apts in that complex too...very nice.....there is a laundry-mat close and some restaurants nearby-walking distance...and a Giant Eagle(grocery-not walkable)..love the North-side....and the Mexican War St. area by the Com.College.....just not late night for girls alone....

I work in the area and I would not want my daughter living over there. Very old, lots of homeless people and congestion.
|
is there some reason the area was picked?....maybe be able to suggest another area if you let us know where they will work or attend school....or have a car or need transportation....there have been some shooting as of late...my daughter works at AGH...and there have been 2 shootings in the last few weeks close to the hospital..

I think they want to live close to downtown as opposed to a suburban type complex. Any suggestions would be welcome

Thanks
Pam

As a former Pittsburgher, I would not recommend a single young lady living on the north side by the Warhol museum.

I would recommend either the Squirrel Hill or Shadyside sections of the city. Both are relatively safe, full of young college age folks, full of activity, restaurants, etc. within walking distance and very accessible to public transportation. Both areas have lots of apts and housing for rent.

Downtown Pitt is only minutes from each.

the North Hill area or maybe Greentree or Crafton area would be good..and not far to town or entertainment..and there are buses that run..there should be an apartment guide online...the area is sort of rundown around the Schoolhouse...there are some areas that you wantto stay away from...

Gritty does indeed describe the area! I travel for work and stay at an Inn in that neighborhood called "The Priory" - it's a great place with lots of antiques in the rooms and very friendly staff! I'm a walker and have walked the neighborhood before dark, and haven't had any trouble. I would say that my husband would be nervous if he saw the area tho.......I'm just more like your daughter and really don't like the "suburbia" hotels as well!!!!
On a good note I would say in the past 5 years I've been going there the area is improving alot!

Lily
