What happened to the Hotel Beacon?
Is it under new management? I hate places that make you call to get a quote and for some reason they don't list their 2 bedrooms online. I called for rates in planning a trip last summer and they told me at no time during June and July was the rate less than $700. I just called regarding next May or June and was told that the rate would not be less than $675.
We were going to take a family trip 2 years ago and had booked one of these rooms and it was only about $100 more than a 1 bedroom. Now it's more than double.

Yeah, I don't know what that's about.
nyt, I could book 2 rooms for about the same (1 bedroom suite, 1 bedroom). I think they can charge what they want, but I think it's a sleazy business practice to make you call for those rooms. The only reason to do that is because you charge different rates depending on the call.

No, the reason to do that is to make sure someone doesn't try to put 12 people in a 2 bedroom suite. I have never known the Beacon to list 2 bedroom suite prices on the website. The Salisbury and the Doubletreee Guest Suites do the same. There are are very few 2 bedroom suites in NYC and they can charge whatever the traffic will bear.

Talk is cheap; some people will do or say anything just to GET access to an accommodation. What they actually DO after they get it has little to do, sometimes, with promises, etc., made over a PHONE.

um, as far as I know hotels are allowed to charge whatever they choose for their rooms - and rates do go up - often sky high - for special occasions. This is the free enterprise system that we have.
You have the choice to take the room or find something else you prefer.

4 friends and I stayed in the Beacon's 2 bdrm/2 ba suite for 3 nights in June two years ago. It was just $525/night, which was an amazing deal, given how nice the accommodations were. So, even at $675, it's not a bad deal.

There is a high demand for properties with 2 br suites and there are very few of them. Prices reflect supply and demand. The Beacon Hotel has become a very popular choice for families.
Are you interested in other options? Radio City Apartments is an apartment style hotel with 2 br suites. Some of the apartment style hotels on Affinia.com have 2 bedroom suites. Also check the Marmara, though the Upper East Side location isn't as convenient.

When you find a gem of a place, and then post over and over and over about how wonderful it is, you should not be surprised when the rates go up and vacancy goes down. It's travel 101. I've wintessed in multiple times here on Fodors. Posters brag about a place, and then whimper when it is booked up and unavailable.
