What else hints at San Francisco besides sourdough and Rice-a-Roni?

Our upcoming trip to San Francisco and Yosemite will be a surprise for my husband's birthday. Before I actually tell him what the trip is, I was thinking I could have some subtle clues in the meal, etc. The only things I can think of are to serve sourdough bread and rice-a-roni, but I know there has to be more! Any suggestions?

Ghirardelli Chocolate.....

Grasshopper Feb 7th, 2005 09:18 AM

Cracked crab and Anchor Steam beer. Are you really going to serve rice-a-roni? Yuck!

J_Correa Feb 7th, 2005 09:31 AM

Mmmmm... Anchor Steam.

E Feb 7th, 2005 09:34 AM

Anchor Steam, yes! Or a nice Napa/Sonoma/Central Coast wine.
Ghirardelli chocolate--my local grocery store carries bars in the baking aisle, so you could whip up, say, a chocolate mousse with it.
Seafood, any kind.
Sourdough, of course.
Rice-a-Roni is such a cute idea, but give the poor man something nicer in addition!
That sounds like a great meal to me...

And don't forget to put a Tony Bennett CD in the stereo...or Chris Isaak, a real local boy.

Sorry--itchy trigger finger!

It's not just sourdough bread - it's soup or salad served in bread istead of a bowl.

Fortune cookies were "born" in SF.

I love it! These are great ideas...

I have a good chocolate trifle recipe that I can add some Ghiradello into. I think I'll probably have the rice-a-roni, but you're right - I should have other options. (It's been forever since I've had it - I don't even remember exactly what it tastes like...) However, the recipes that I've found for cioppino look to be a little beyond my culinary talents!

I'll have to check the local Pop-n-Beer for Less for Anchor Steam. Yes, we actually have a store by that name...and no, they probably don't have that beer. I'll probably have to look elsewhere! :)

Make a flat cake and on top make the Golden Gate Bridge out of popsicle sticks and string.
Make placecards and at the botton of the card, type: "made of recycled paper from giant Redwoods"

Oh, cd, at last we know -- cd stands for "crafty diva".

I unsuccessfully tried to search for a very recent thread on this same topic. We also discussed a hangtown fry -- a San Francisco original breakfast specialty. I'd avoid the rice-a-roni for fear he won't want to go at all!

a famous ice cream treat, sort of a sandwich, from sf is called an It's It.

BobbiOh Feb 7th, 2005 03:34 PM

One of my favorite memories....sitting at one the roadside stands down at Fishermans' Wharf eating Clam Chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.

Orcas Feb 7th, 2005 05:21 PM

I'm with Underhill. I think you can duplicate an "It's It" by making a sandwich of two oatmeal cookies with vanilla ice cream in the middle. Yummy!

Don't forget Journey and Huey Lewis and the News!

This is the other SF food thread if anyone's interested: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34558824

I get a drink called a Foglifter sometimes at brunch, it's champagne and either raspberry wine or Chambord (raspberry flavored liqueur), which would be good for the name. And I guess that in theory you could serve anything and call it a Foglifter.

Maybe shape some mashed potatoes into hills...or the Coit Tower? Bread and water for Alcatraz?

love
