To The Top

happytrailstoyou Jul 24th, 2005 11:48 AM

I asked the same question a few weeks ago. It seems to me anybody who takes the time to post a reply would want to write a message that is understood by everybody who reads it, but apparently some people assume we all have the same Little Orphan Annie Decoder Ring.

wrep Jul 24th, 2005 02:03 PM

I agree w/happytrails. What does "to the top" mean? Thanks.

starrsville Jul 24th, 2005 02:06 PM

Only 50 posts show up on the first page of this forum. When a post has dropped down past 50th (and doesn't show up on the first page) someone will often move it back up by posting a reply to the post.

If that poster who is trying to move it back it to the top of the list of posts has something new to add or say, they will type in such a response.

When they just want to move it back to the top, they will type ttt to do so quickly.

Sometimes the person posting a reply is the OP.

OP means Opening Poster.

Hope that helps.

Scarlett Jul 24th, 2005 02:07 PM

I am sorry!
For those without the decoder ring, it means that when no one posts a reply on a particular thread, it drops to the bottom of the list as other threads are "topped"/replied to.
By typing ttt or to the top or topping or whatever word appeals to you, it brings your post up to the top of the page again..as my reply to this will.
Hope this helps. If it does not, turn in your decoder ring at once.

crzyjodi Jul 24th, 2005 02:08 PM

ttt means that someone read your question and wanted it to reappear at the TOP of the column of questions, so thant people who may be able to answer your question see it as soon as they log on and don't have to search thru 200 questions...if u don't post every day your post is usually in no mands land. If some one replies ttt, it is only helping you out.

LoveItaly Jul 24th, 2005 02:10 PM

Instead of critizing TTT please understand that often when you start a thread if if doesn't get a lot of answers your thread drops down the line. First it is #1, suddenly it is #32. Then a bit later it is #68 and so forth.

So a kind Fodorite sees your thread and posts "TTT". This makes your thread go to the top of the threads again so that hopefully someone that knows the answer to your question will respond, hopefully more than one person.

It is not meant to be a "secret code". It is done out of kindness.

And sometimes posters "top" their own thread with hopes that once their thread is back on the top of the threads someone with the knowledge they are seeking will see it and respond.

LoveItaly Jul 24th, 2005 02:13 PM

Well, LOL, guess we all were trying to be helpfull! So wrep now (at least at this moment)your thread is at the top of the list. Fodorites are always willing to help others.

Scarlett Jul 24th, 2005 02:16 PM

Well, now that someone has brought up the Secret Decoder Ring, I think this should be brought up at the next Secret Fodorite Meeting.

There will sometimes also be that bored poster who will go through Fodors Archives for the oldest thread and they top it just for the "fun" of it.

starrsville Jul 24th, 2005 02:19 PM

Shhh!!!
SCARLETT!!!
You aren't supposed to talk about the secret meetings.

Now, you're going to get them started on the clique thing again.

Insert wagging finger emoticon (if anyone knows how to do one)

Kal Jul 25th, 2005 07:24 AM

It's a Secret Decoder Fodor PIN that Ms. Bets uses.

Betsy Jul 25th, 2005 09:00 AM

LOL, Love and Kal. If you really must know, my sacred pin has a secret decoder chip in it. And yes, of course I attended the secret meeting.

:-) :-) :-)

Scarlett Jul 25th, 2005 09:24 AM

<Playing hookey from packing :D>

Betsy,
could this be that chip that also helps find me if I get lost? LOL ((L)) Kal
Mornin Love!
Now back to stick my head in a box ~

seetheworld Jul 25th, 2005 09:33 AM

Forget the decoder ring, where do I get me one of those GPS chips? I want to give it to my soon-to-be 19 year for his birthday. Are they hard to implant and do they come with directions and do I need to administer any anesthesia? Thanks.

Betsy Jul 26th, 2005 10:02 AM

Kally, how the heck do you get lost in a hotel room that doesn't have closets?

Seetheworld, I think I saw an implant-it-yourself book at Amazon.
:-)

Pappy Jul 26th, 2005 10:29 AM

And all this time I thought it meant Try Taking Turns. Huh.
