"Did you guys know that the baggy pants craze originated in prison?"

MC Hammer was in prison?!? :-)

My question would be-are you planning on an all prison all the time holiday and are looking to fit in through skin adornment? You'd do better by bulking up and working on your martial arts skill! You should also learn to speak Spanish, study Islam, read Mein Kampf and the writings of Malcom X, get a background in law-instant popularity with fellow inmates-establish an inexhaustible pipeline of ciggies and home baked goods- great for barter-and I understand in some prisons a little Russian helps. Not a person but the language.Perhaps you could do some research by starting to watch Prison Break on Monday night.
As for tats, they are as varied as the real world. There are tats for gang affiliation, sexual orientation, crimes commited, sentence and time left to serve, country of origin, outside neighborhood, rank within the group, religious affiliation. A prisoners whole life history can be read in their ink. Some can be quite crude, but others can be elaborate, ornate and colorful. Work in the kitchen and library are 2 great means to acquire colors for staining.
So have fun on your prison holiday and remember, dont pick up the soap!!!

Did anyone follow Oz on HBO?.. a bit too rough for me after the lipstick scene..obviously, the color was all wrong for him. He chose cool when it should have been warm.

mikemo Sep 22nd, 2006 08:27 AM

Did you read "The Red Dragon"?
M

jetset1 Sep 22nd, 2006 08:31 AM

momof2 Sep 22nd, 2006 08:36 AM

And this thread doesn't get pulled! I could just bust a gut. Where are you guys coming up with this stuff? :)

jetset1 Sep 22nd, 2006 08:43 AM

I did read The Red Tent, but that was different subject matter.. great book tho.

I see more and more tattoos everyday! They are rather common at work with the newest generation.

I work for Big Pharma in a location where we don't have a dress code. People work in jeans/slacks/skirts, sandals and short sleeves.

I have seen tattoos on all working levels: from machine operators and maintenance personnel to young engineers of both sexes and lower management (I guess high level managers are older than the tatoo craze).

Some of the tattoos are a work of art, but I still wonder how they will look in stretched, saggy skin :(

At which prison will next Fodors GTG be held?

jetset1 Sep 22nd, 2006 09:04 AM

JAGIRL Sep 22nd, 2006 09:27 AM

gail,
A follow up question : Who's gonn attend that prison GTG? :))

I'll rsvp right now : Oh no!!! Looks like I won't be able to make it. I...uhh...have to wash my hair that weekend...

jetset1 Sep 22nd, 2006 10:42 AM

This could lead to a new thread.. if you could have any tattoo, what would it be? And if that's not enough, where would it be?

gail Sep 22nd, 2006 11:02 AM

jetset - it must be travel related - so the question must be "To WHERE would you travel to get what tatoo" (note this is somewhat different than WHERE would the tatoo be)

suze Sep 22nd, 2006 11:03 AM

or we could survey Fodorites who already have tattoos... where did they travel to get them?

jetset1 Sep 22nd, 2006 11:18 AM

fine, I'll go.. I'd like a small dolphin tattoo on my ? and I'll go back to Hawaii to get it!

toedtoes Sep 22nd, 2006 01:00 PM

I want a tattoo of an excon toothless trucker on my ? and I'll go to Spokane to get it.

RedRock Sep 22nd, 2006 02:11 PM

Prison tattoos look like I don't want to be around someone that has one.

Then again some may find these characters fascinating.

The story on origins of sagging, which was mentioned above: Sagging started in prison because prisoner's belts are taken away, so they have nothing to hold up their pants. From the prisons to our high schools...what is wrong with our society?

RedRock Sep 22nd, 2006 02:44 PM

When my dad was a young man and sowing his wild oats he had a tattoo put on his arm that said "Love Virgina Mae", a childhood sweetheart...... It was a little awkward later in life since my mothers name is Ann. They were married for a little over 50 years.

My brother had a bunch of them on his arms when he was in the Navy back in the 50's. To this day he will not wear a short sleeve shirt. My, how times have changed...

suze Sep 22nd, 2006 02:51 PM

Even new generation tattoos grow old fast. My twenty-something co-worker had one lasered off recently. It was a wedding gift to her husband (the name on her arm was not that of the man she was going to marry)!

jetset1 Sep 22nd, 2006 03:29 PM

toedtoes~ get Donald Duck instead.

Why? Because you quack me up, yuk yuk..

jetset1 Sep 22nd, 2006 03:36 PM

Toedtoes~ you might find it amusing that when I visit relatives in SPOKANE for Thanksgiving, I plan to do a drive-by moon, and flash my walnut cracking glutes at the randy truckers..

honk honk, lol!!!!!

toedtoes Sep 22nd, 2006 04:38 PM

Jetset - I'm sure those truckers will appreciate the view!! But don't forget to tattoo your rates there first - don't want them to have to ask around...

:)

This fellow was so deeply in love that just before he was married, he had his bride's name tattooed on his love muscle. Normally, only the first and last letters were visible, although when he was aroused, the tattoo spelled out W-E-N-D-Y. Now they're on their honeymoon at a resort in Montego Bay. One night, in the men's room, this fellow finds himself standing next to a tall Jamaican at the urinal. To his amazement, he notices that this man, too, has the letters W-Y tattooed on his "thing". "Excuse me," he says, "but I couldn't help noticing your tattoo. Do you have a girlfriend named Wendy?" "No way, mon, I work for the Tourist board. Mine reads, "Welcome to Jamaica, mon, have a nice day.'"
