What Do You Want in a Hotel Room?

Bo-jack, In 1975 I was hit with a $.50 phone charge at a Ramada Hotel in Williamsburgh, VA. The desk clerk was reluctant to remove the charge even though the phone was not in working order.
Recently in Veracruz, Mexico, a hotel attempted unsuccessfully to charge me 25% tips on three "free" breakfasts and $2.50 each for packets of coffee next to the in-room coffee maker.

Total gross out- the moldy shower curtain that touches you in the shower!!eeewwww!!! I would rather have a flood on the bathroom floor..or if only there for a day, wait till I get home to shower.
I also agree that smelly rooms bother me also. We had one amerisuites in KY that had the smelliest air freshner. I gave the maid an extra five, if she didn't spray that crud in my room. It smelled much better after that!

Blackout curtains so the floodlights in the parking lot don't shine in my window all night.
Sheers underneath the blackouts so I can enjoy natural daylight with a modicum of privacy at the same time.

Don't know if this repeats someone, but I really love it when the sink and mirror are not in the same room with the toilet and shower -- no fogged-up mirror, and I can use the mirror while he's in the shower.
On the other hand, once we've dealt with quiet and not-smelly, I do object to "light pollution" -- in other words, a door to the hall that goes all the way to the floor instead of having a 1" or more crack at the bottom letting all the light from the hall in. And light-blocking curtains (not venetian blinds) that close ALL the way. And bless the ones that have a nightlight in the bathroom (on the switch or under the hairblower or wherever) so that no one has to turn the light on for the wee-hour-wee, waking both self and partner up with all that LOUD LIGHT!

We always try to stay in nice hotels if at all possible and they have most of the things you have posted except, I like to have new sleepers to walk on the carpet. My wife 99% of the time will ask for a fresh laundered bed spread and pillows after check in.

Cassandra, I agree with you about the nightlight in the bathroom. I first found one in a little cabin we rent for $65 a night, but they appear so infrequently that we carry little flashlights to avoid turning on lights for those nighttime bathroom visits. Lovingheart

Well, as an Interior Designer, the second thing I do, after un-packing, is move the furniture around! I put my laptop on the desk and move the desk so that I can see the Tv during morning news. I move chairs and lamps and have even brought my own 150 watt bulb to read by!
Heck, I'm paying for the night, I might as well be comfortable.
jor...most of us folk in Missouri would at least buy you some chicken wings or a six pack before seeing you in your tighty whities....i apologize for poor behavior on somone from my state....

Everything mentioned above, of course, plus ...
Better TV channel selection. Why oh why do the number of available channels go down as the price of the hotel goes up? Just because it's a high-dollar downtown hotel doesn't mean every guest likes to only surf between CNBC, CSPAN, and whatever other news and politics channels are out there. Give me Speed Channel! Give me Discovery! Give me HGTV!!
And I second the suggestions of taller showerheads and sinks outside the bathroom.

I once was flown to a job interview in San Antonio and put up for the night at a fine hotel. I was really impressed until I saw a Huge cock roach running around in the bathroom acting like he owned it. Total gross-out. Then I moved to S.A. and bought a house and discovered it ain't no big deal. They're everywhere.

Unlocked stairwells! We stayed at MGM in Vegas and the stairwell doors were locked... I did inquire, but they gave me that condescending tone and told me that IF ther WAS a fire or other disaster, the doors would automatically unlock and they would ?intercom instructions of what to do.
I am a safety nut, I know, but it didn't make me feel very 'safe'. I don't know how many of you recall that MGM has actually had a disasterous fire many years ago (when it was in the present day Balley's location)!
