They should be outlawed. Number one violation of the Fashion police, without a doubt!

Ugly but, (I'm sorry to say) very useful. A purse can be really inconvenient some places and I'm hard pressed to come up with an alternative.

Ugly, unflattering, unfashionable, unappealing

Litespeed, why an L?

I agree with Jette. They are perfect for carrying just a few things (sunscreen, lib balm, room key and a little cash) I think taking a purse to the beach, even a small one, would look even worse!
If I'm on a city tour, a purse is fine, but not at the beach!
Does anyone have an alternative???

I have an alternatice. Their are some beautiful backpack style pocetbooks. They are often leather, sometimes fabric, much smaller than a regular backpack and very stylish. They keep your hands free. All the major pokcetbook makers make them - Coach, Nine West, Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade, etc, etc. Try the big department stores or even TJ Maxx/Marshalls. I've got 3 of them and always take them when traveling.

Eagle Creek makes a bag called a sidekick, which is a shoulder bag that has a hidden waist belt option.

I find it useful when I know there will be parts of the day that I really need to have my hands free, but I can use it as a shoulder bag the rest of the day.

I wear a fanny pack is when I am mountain biking or doing some light hiking. They are great for carrying a a few essentialls like water, snacks, a few tools, and a wallet. The fanny pack is nicer than a backpack because it keeps your center of gravity a little lower. Fanny packs look funny, but I'm not exactly concerned with fashion when I am out in the woods.

When I am travelling I usually take a small canvas backpack or a backpack-style leather purse. The canvas backpack works for the beach too.

Eek!
Very high on the tack-o-meter. (Especially when worn by a gentleman, and paired with black sandals and white socks, with an underwear shirt and some gray chest hair peeking out of the Vee neck.)
I agree with the backpack suggestion or a cute shoulder strap purse to leave hands/arms free. (For ladies, not the aforementioned fellow
I have never and will never own a fanny pack.
Just what I need - my already J-Lo-sized behind "enhanced" by more bulk!

Have to agree that they are ugly beyond what should be allowed by law. However, they are also pretty handy when at an amusement park. Carry your wallet, glasses, etc. and you can get on a ride without worrying about something coming loose. And no one looks good at an amusement park anyway so when I wear one there I just blend in.

There is no way in the world I would use one otherwise. While its great to have your hands free while in the city or elsewhere, a stylish backpack or a small purse with a strap long enough to wear across your body is far more attractive.

Don't mean to be a jerk but I am having a hard time picturing someone in a bathing suit sporting a fanny pack. Its just not working for me. A cute backpack is a better alternative.

Hey Nina - have fun in Arizona. Hope you'll do a report when you get back.

Has anyone ever noticed that you never see a skinny person with a fanny pack?

Thanks Bennie, I'll definitely do a report, I really gotta get the clothes out now, can anyone help? See my post on packing for AZ

Anyway GoTravel, You're right about skinny people, and why do they call them fanny packs when everyone wears them in front? Why not belly packs?
