I use it when I travel..however, almost everytime (in a specific city/airport), I am told to remove it, place it in my carry on and then walk through. WHY is this considered a CARRY on when it's on one's body not taking up space.

I've put a water bottle there, my cell phone...my pills, money, credit card, pens..beats carry my purse around AND a fashionable backpack or purse. The point of these things is to NOT have a purse. Personally, I don't care about fashionable, just COMFORT when I'm on vacation.

My boyfriend, an avid fisherman would rather lug around a bait bucket than wear the "fanny pack" bait holder he was given one year which is obviously much more convenient.

Eagle Creek makes several great little travel purses - amazing how much they hold! I used one on our last European trip and was happy with it. We usually use a backpack too, but sometimes have a tendency to overload it. I find that with the little purse, I keep the contents to a minimum and it's light to carry. The strap is adjustable and can go over the shoulder or across the body and leaves hands free. My husband uses a money belt (worn under clothes), and I have a little thin money holder on a string that I can wear around the neck and under clothes. We keep the day's spending money in front pockets. There is also a bag that is called a "healthy back bag" that is worn over the shoulder and is supposed to distribute the weight more evenly. I am thinking of getting one before our next trip. They are made of leather or microfiber.

When you are in Disneyland with preschoolers and a stroller, a fanny pack comes in handy. At this stage in life, surviving such a vacation with the least amount of discomfort takes priority over fashion. (Ah, I remember the days when I wore summer dresses to go sightseeing... Those were pre-toddler days...)

dorky. might wear one if I was taking a walk in the woods, but wouldn't wear one in "public"!

This is so funny, my mom just came in town this weekend and I literally had to pry her hands off of a fanny pack she was about to buy. I led her to one of the little purses that you can sling across your chest...not precisely a better fashion option, but a huge improvement to a fanny pack. She was able to get her money, her credit cards, her cell phone, her sunglasses and a few other things in there. Those small things are surprisingly roomy.

Although I find it weird that everyone says only heavy people wear them. All I ever see are these scrawny little men or women wearing them...with their knee length bright shorts and keds. I wouldn't put them down, but it does seem to follow a certain fashion style.

I agree that sporting folks are allowed however...bicyclists, skiers, hikers.
