I was going to send a polite reply about how I think they're kinda dorky but you all have been so honest about how awful they are! And I must agree! Here in California, I know a lot of tourists wear them, but I would NEVER dream of wearing one! I use a backpack pocketbook for my money, keys and a lipstick. (Yes, when my kids are along I have a cute plush frog backpack that holds two sippy cups, two diapers and wipes just perfectly!)

Count me as the one skinny person who wears one with her bikini. I am a big beach walker. The more miles the better. I don't care what I look like when I am out walking because I'll never see those people again anyway. There is no other way to carry a camera, room key, etc while walking on the beach. This way I get a tan (vanity) while walking mega miles in my bikini. I'm too pretty to care that I look a little stupid while doing what I love in the most care free way possible.

I can't believe some of the ridiculous comments on this ridiculous thread, and I really can't believe I'm even participating. I personally don't like fanny packs and don't use one, but comments about people being losers or skinny people never being caught wearing them is just ridiculous. Yeah, I know, if I don't like the thread I should just skip over it and yada yada.

Agree they are ugly - now - can someone come up with a really good alternative for a small amount of stuff that keeps both hands free - now that invention would make a million. Only suggestion I see in above posts for alternative is a short handled tote - to me that does not serve the same purpose or is nearly as functional.

I'll be honest, I find them uncomfortable, but they are practical. I won't walk around with a purse weighing my shoulder and back down. I have things to take with me. As far as what they look like, I don't care what others think. The thing is, *I* find it comfortable to have.

Gosh - I'll be wearing mine while hiking next week - and I was going to ask my BF to wear one too! But now... if he would only carry his own wallet. I end up with both wallets, cameras, maps, first aid pouch, etc. just in mine. And he says a backpack is a pain...

A long handled tote goes over one shoulder and then you forget about it. Both hands are free. My tote is neoprene and weighs less full than a leather bag weighs empty.

I bought a slim canvas money belt that I wore under my shirt in Paris to keep money & credit cards. Why the hell don't women's clothes have pockets?

A bikini and a fanny pack? I've got to absorb this for a minute.

If they are dorky, what do you suggest I use when I ski? A backpack won't work and my pockets are not big enough to hold my stuff.

I have to laugh at the UK folks thinking fanny packs are "US tourists"...here on the Gulf Coast of Florida, we immediately peg fanny-pack wearers as either UK or German tourists, especially if they're combined with a too-small ages-old swimsuit! (SMB where are you from?)

I don't ski so this has me quite puzzled, why would one wear a fanny pack for "stuff" when one is skiing?

You need someplace to keep sunglasses if you start off with goggles, or goggles if you remove them to put on sunglasses, powerbars, ski lock (you might not stop for lunch at the same rack you started from in the am), trail map, etc, etc. Hardcore skiers sometimes don't want to stop for anything, especially to take off their skis to go back into the lodge!

Fanny packs for skiing and hiking receive a special dispensation from the fashion police. They are not considered dorky under those circumstances!

Just having another giggle at the term 'fanny pack' - if you check my posts I had a long and hilarious discussion with MichelleNYC about the meaning of the word in the UK in the Europe forum!

Anyway (back to subject) - I hate 'bumbags' and won't be seen with one (sooo naf) but my partner (male) will insist on using one when we are travelling from one hotel to another to keep valuables such as passports etc. I insist he puts his t shirt over it so it can't be seen - then he looks pregnant - arrghhh!!

What alternative is there if one is only staying in hotels for a night at a time then travelling onwards, as its clearly not worth using a safe if you have to pay for a week or whatever?

I cringe when even thinking of fanny packs. When we moved to FL I was given one as a gag gift. I ended up giving it to the kids to play with. For the beach we take a tote bag, Europe I take a large purse with a shoulder strap (but only for maps and tissues and such...nothing valueable)...and for here around home a regular purse...very small though...there is no reason to bring the whole kitchen drawer with me.

As far as hikers and fanny packs...we are serious hikers and I get afraid when I see people hiking with those...can tell in an instant that they are not prepared for an emergency and I always wonder when their time will come to have to be rescued.

Cheers, Elb - I suppose a moneybelt would be more discreet.
