What did you do on your summer vacation?

With the last day of summer officially behind us, I ask the age-old back-to-school question: What did you do on your summer vacation?

Where did you go, and did you like it? If you didn't get a summer vacation , did you spend time planning--or daydreaming about-- a trip soon?

I'll go first!

We went to Las Vegas for a long weekend, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to a friend's cabin, and to Ireland for a wedding. We also took a couple of "local tourist" outings, to explore St. Paul and New Ulm, Minnesota (great brats and Schell beer, plus a glockenspiel--what's not to like?!).

Vegas was lots spiffier than I remember it being 7 years ago; the UP gets lovelier every time we visit, plus we scored some Nimrod gear in Watersmeet--I am a Nimrod!; and Ireland was, of course, awfully green and pretty, the Guinness tatstes better there, and the people are among the friendliest in the world. A good summer, all in all.

Your turn!

A nice summer - in NC at the beach, in Maui on business mixed with fun, in Nashvile to see family, and finally in Botswana to view the game. Colorado and Vt coming up, and possibly somewhere in Europe or Asia, time permitting. Priority right now is to close on a west coast condo to live in, so keeping fingers crossed no snafus, then will be free to travel once again. Nice question. Next?

Thanks for the fun question, E!

Went to the Riviera Maya in Mexico -- Playa Del Carmen & Cancun.

Tulum is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I like to go different places every year, but this area is the most addictive of anyplace I've ever traveled.

Over the summer, both sets of parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries, so we took one trip to central Minnesota and one to southern Illinois for the anniversary events. Not exactly exotic, but nice (plus we'd been to Paris for spring break, so we really can't complain!)

Great question E!

We went to New York City in May!! Cannot wait to go back, what an amazing place with wonderful people.

Also stayed in a cabin in Jasper in the Canadian Rockies, one of the most beautiful places on earth.

We went to Mexico's Riviera Maya for a week in June. The weather was lovely. The beach was beautiful. The ruins were something to see. We had a wonderful time.
I went to visit two of my brothers in N. California for a long weekend. It was really nice to see them and my nieces and nephew. We took a day to tour 2 vineyards (Mondavi and Beringer). I'm not sure why but I was very happy at the end of the tours
Even though it doesn't count as a summer vacation, in exactly one week the husband and I will be on a plane to the British Virgin Islands for our 5th wedding anniversary (storms permitting!). Leaving our cutie pie with my fabulous sister-in-law. Can't wait!

In June we we went to Hilton Head island for a week.
In July and August we spent time in Dallas as that is where my freshman daughter decided to go to college -SMU.

Is today the official first day of Fall?

We spent three weeks of April to May in an apartment in New York city (subletting illegally from friends -- well in theory we were their guests!). From there we flew to London for two weeks then a week of driving to Stratford and in Wales where we totalled a car (but no one hurt!). From there flew to Italy where we did a lot including renting apartments for a week each in Rome, Venice, and Montepulciano. Plus we visited Ischia, Naples, and Ravello.
We spent the better part of a week in Cannes, France, then two night stops in Lyon and Beaune before renting an apartment in Paris for 12 nights.

We flew home the end of July for five nights (to do laundry and catch up), then flew to San Francisco for 5 days, drove to Ashland, Oregon where we were joined by friends for the Theatre Festival. We then spent a few days at Lake Tahoe with my partner's brother and wife. Flew to LA for 5 nights, then drove to Las Vegas for three nights and then flew home.

No more travel till next summer for us -- our travel allowances are really depleted!!

Can you believe summer is already over? Where did it go? I think Minnesota especially was short-changed this year.

Did a long weekend with hubby in Monterey/Carmel to celebrate our 1st anniversary. I'd never been there and absolutely loved it- the scenery, the shopping, drooling over the homes-- wonderful.

Did a girl's trip to Dallas (where I grew up) with 2 of my best buddies. Instead of staying with our respective parents like we normally do, we stayed at the Melrose and explored Dallas like tourists.

We spent most of our summer weekends near Detroit Lakes, MN at my in-law's cabin. It was warm about 3 times over the summer and we were able to go into the water a few times. Other than that- lots of fires, sweatshirts, and jackets!

Took a long weekend in LA to go to my brother-in-law's wedding. Mostly family oriented activities but still a lot of fun.

Next week- a 10 day adventure to South Korea (where I am originally from) with hubby in tow. He's 6'2" and blonde so he should blend in quite nicely My parents are already there on their own trip so we'll meet up with them for a great vacation. I haven't been since '89 and I'm eager to see all of my family again!! And eat...and shop...

I went hiking (well, walking really) and horseback riding in Colorado. Also visited some National Park/sites/forest/etc. Very restful and NO CELL PHONES the entire time. Worst part of the trip was the delayed flight returning home.

Went to the beach and didn't do much there (as I planned).

Visited my brother and sister-in-law one weekend. We cooked out and they took me on a tour of the new developments near their home.

Yes fall starts at about midday today.

In June a long weekend in Vegas. Lots of fun but took the redeye there and back. We've never done a redeye before and it was rather exhausting for us.

In July, Great Smokey Mtn Nat'l Park w/ a side trip to Biltmore Estate. Very beautiful. We celebrated my parents 50th wedding anniversary there(chose there because they had gone there on their honeymoon). Very nice anniversary dinner at the Peddler Restaurant in Gatlinburg. Excellent food and very reasonable -- Over 30 of us ordered off the menu + a beautiful chocolate anniversary cake in a private room with a beautiful view for a little over $1100.

Two glorious weeks directly on the beach in Dennis (Cape Cod). I grew up on the Cape and my parents still live less than a mile from the beach, so we're there all the time (we're 45 minutes away), but there's nothing like falling asleep to the crashing of the waves, and waking up, rolling over, and looking at the ocean. It's one of those beaches where you can walk forever across the sandbars at low tide, perfect for our young kids.

My DH and I also got away to Portland, ME, for a long weekend, no kids. Great food, great shopping, but most importantly, great relaxation!

I know it was nothing exotic or adventurous and we stuck fairly close to home, but to me, it's what summer vacations all about--lazy beach days, relaxed schedules, and lots of old-fashioned fun. We like to save the far-off vacations for the cold winter months when we want to escape New England weather for a week or two!

Ah, where did the summer go? Well, despite the cool weather here in Chicago it was a good one. Rapid City, S.D. for work but snuck in Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park and then our road trip to Philadelphia, the Jersey Shore and NYC. That coupled with many Michigan weekends made it a pretty good summer.

Summer vacation? Never take them. We don't have kids and summer in the Pacific Northwest is just too nice to leave. We do our vacationing in winter. We'll be in Maui for a week in December and probably Mexico for a week or ten days in February.

Took Amtrak from Syracuse to Chicago then to Washington DC via the New River Gorge. Then onto Cumberland MD to ride the Western Maryland excursion train(Steam locomotive) and then back to Chicago for two days of sight seeing. Amtrak to Erie PA to visit my father and then home. Excellent trip even with the problems and delays that will always accompany a trip.

As you may guess I am sort of a train enthusiast(nut). But I have yet to figure out a way to see the country in a more lesurily manner than through the window of a passenger/sleeper car.

What summer? Here in the upper midwest it's been a very cool one. I think we've used the lake we live on the least since we moved here - just to chilly. Anyway spent 2 weeks in Alaska in July(it was warmer there) - Fab trip with a group of great friends. LIFE IS GOOD!
