Hi the Sheraton NY and Towers is an ok hotel. The location is just a few blocks from Times Square - so you are in the heart of the tourist area. It's not where I would chose to stay if $$ were not an issue. BUT it is a good location to use as a base if you are first visiting NY. you can find the hotel using www.spg.com - the website for all Starwood properties. Direct contact information would be there.

Of the 4 hotels you mentioned earlier, I would second the Soho location. You will be closer to trendier shops, restaurants, nightlife that is less the tourist center of town.

A few things you may enjoy while in NY. on Broadway - "In the Heights" is a fabulous musical. Off broadway - "STOMP". www.stomponline.com or www.broadwaybox.com. This last sight describes all things on or off broadway.

The location of the hotel is excellent for you.

You are close to Times Square but not in the middle, close to Central Park, subways, Fifth Avenue Shopping, Rockefeller Center, etc.

You'll love the hotel and thank the hotel gods you don't have to share a bathroom with strangers.

Big props to mclaurie for that excellent priceline tip!

If anyone can try and open either spg.com or starwood.com sites and just get me the contact info, especially email for this hotel I booked, I would really appreciate it... it just doesn't open

While the Sheraton is certainly central, it's a big (used a lot by conventions) somewhat outdated place with some distressingly bad reviews on Tripadvisor including a recent one claiming a problem with bedbugs. It will serve as a good base for the short time you have in NYC but be fussy about accepting the room they assign. It's your privilege to see the room before accepting it.

***FYI***

When stating a Manhattan address, you are responsible to know the cross street you are going to.

For example, above you wrote “Sheraton New York and Towers, 811 Seventh Ave.”

Sheraton Towers lists the address as “811 7th Avenue 53rd Street” on their website.

If you are taking a taxi (or asking about the area) to the hotel, you have to say "Seventh Avenue and 53st Street". That is the case whenever you are taking a taxi, not just to the hotel.

I must be completely honest... I was terrified doing the "bid" thing on priceline, and know that I would never even been able to pay for this room otherwise.

This whole accomodation thing in NY, looking for it, was not a nice and I had no say in the process as to which place I wanted to accpet. It made me nervous. I had to accept what I get.

I did read the reviews on tripadvisor, many being a few years old, but the most recent one was very positive, seeing that it was all renovated recently. Nelsonian gave me link to read about someone who stayed there, now, recently, and she also found it positive. Thank you Nelsonian, this post did make me be at rest more. I will definately give you all feedback as to what the place really is like.

Thank you very much for their email!

As for how to speak of the locations in New York, I was not aware that you have to speak that way. Thank you for the info, I know this would make the worlds difference when asking for directions etc.

Any good places you can recommend for breakfast or dinner in this area? I will go and look on menupages as well, but some personal recommendations are alwyas nice!

Stop reading the reports.

My honest opinion is that Trip Advisor really blows. It is bad.

Some of my most favorite hotels have people trashing it on Trip Advisor.

I really think it is a useless tool.

It makes more people nervous about their hotel than it ever did to ease any fears.

HATE Trip Advisor.

This hotel is MILES better than the West End Studios and a LOT more centrally located. I just didn't want you to be expecting a glamorous 4* hotel. You should realize *'s are as much about amenities (restaurant, fitness center etc.) as "niceness."

As for breakfast places, Lou's Cafe on 6th ave. & 53 st. is cheap and cheerful. Cosmic Diner on 8th & 52 st. is another idea. Park Cafe I think is closest at 7th & 55-56th and it's good but pricey. Zibetto at 6th & 56th is supposed to have great coffee. Another way to find places near the hotel is to map it on maps.google.com and then use the "search nearby" feature for whatever you want.

Thank you for everyones inputs! Iam really looking forward to visiting your country. Will let you know how it is.

I am leaving my 3 little children at home, and we want to know, if we bring a laptop, how do we go about communicating back home via e-mail / skype? We have an internet contract through our service provider, do you think it will work? Or do I have to buy something in your country?

To PHONE home, you can buy a long distance phone card in most newstands or delis or the Duane Reade's that are almost on every other block (combo health and beauty aids and some basic foods). Just find out what if any charges the Sheraton has for using a phone card from the room.

For email, near the Sheraton there's an Applebee's that has free wifi but I'm not sure if you need a particular wireless service on your computer. You might ask your current internet provider.

PS, this thread has gotten too long imo. For best info on keeping in touch, I'd start a new thread asking about phone/skype/free internet in NYC in the title.
