Just returned from this area a couple of weeks ago. kam's advice was super and her Sonoma picks are tops. Also hit a Valley of the Moon in Sonoma which was totally uncrowded and very pleasant. St. Supery had a self-tour in Napa that we hit perfectly and got to see the harvested grapes on their first
handling into the machines that broke their skins and ground their stems etc. for compost. Hit Mondavi at just the right moment went 2 people cancelled on a tour and we took their places. Tastings here $$ but we learned a lot.
So many places, and so little time.

forget santui on the weekend too crowded and not great food. Buy food at oakville grocery and go up oakville grade to LA famiglia . Great views and quiet

Why resurrect an 8 year old thread? Lots of the information is out of date.

Sterling winery is a neat place to go - you do have to pay to ride the gondola to the top of the "mountain" and visit the winery. It includes the wine tasting - at least it did the one and only time we were there. I would not recommend the wine - none of it was good. But it may be worth it for the view and the fun of going to it.

We visited this new winery last October. It cost $25 for the tour and the wine tasting. Expensive but then all the wineries are now charging for tasting and some take it off the bill if you purchase wine.

Just got back from that area, I felt the best view (and good wine) was Sterling Vineyards. Pricey. You take a tram to the top and price includes 6 samples.

Avoid Ferrari Carano - unless you are a lover of mediocre wines and ostentatious faux chateau architecture.

I don't see how anyone who has adopted the moniker "charles_shaw" can pass judgement on anyone's wines.

Disregard his post. There's nothing wrong with Ferrari-Carano wines.

Especially a "Charles Shaw" who registered in the middle of the night simply to top this old, moldy thread.

Probably an old time fodorite who thought he was being "witty" . . . .

I'm a huge fan of Suncé Winery and Harvest Moon, which are conveniently located next door to each other in Santa Rosa. Small operations with big heart!
