It was great to watch the Tony's last night. A wonderful way to get a glimpse of Broadway shows that one might like or dislike. Although Spring Awakening won a lot of awards, I could tell right away that its not for me. I was thrilled that David Hyde Pierce won for Curtains, it was one of my favorites on the last trip. The Tony's did make me sorry that I missed Grey Gardens, it looked much more interesting than I originally thought.

Even after the Tony Awards though, I stick with my original list of suggestions for your teens. Let us know what you see and how the family enjoys.

missypie, you're right on all counts. 1. Your kids would not enjoy Grey Gardens.
2. Definitely watch the Grey Gardens film first, especially if you plan on seeing it (without the kids, of course).
3. You and your 11-year-older are right about Spring Awakening.
I'd put Hairspray at the top of the list of shows that all five are you are likely to like! Discounts are available.

On what site are you finding discounts for Hairspray? Those on Broadwaybox.com expire June 28th. It seems like everything we're interested in has discounts expiring either June 28 or July 8. I need tickets for July 10 or 11.

See Theatermania.com for "Hairspray" discounts through July 19th. If you search, there are others.

Just bought the Hairspray tickets - $65 each, 2nd row center mezzanine. It's interesting to me that, with discount codes, the tickets are no more expensive-and sometimes less expensive-than seeing a touring company in Dallas or Ft. Worth.

I think you'll be very pleased with those seats (and the show).

If you have time, also see SPAMALOT. It's absolutely hilarious, and the kids will most likely really love it -- it's big, colorful and goofy.

Having read great things about Xanadu, I Netflixed the movie, wanting to see if we'd like the music. Now the kids REALLY don't want to see the show! When people say that movie is bad, it is REALLY bad. I would say that the acting is on the level of community theatre, but that would be an insult to community theatre. We stopped it half way through because we were all falling asleep. I guess we'll finish it over the weekend.

Another vote for Spamalot...I loved it, my husband loved it and my boss saw it on my suggestion when he went to London and liked it so much he saw it again in New York.

See...now there was your mistake - renting that bad movie. You should see the Broadway play without boring yourself with the movie. The play completely makes fun of the movie and everything you hated about it -- and they do it quite well I might add.

But I had never seen the movie, so I wouldn't have known what they were mocking.

I was considering Spamalot, but the recent reviews on Broadwaybox say that the current cast is really bad.

Too bad you missed the new Off-Broadway musical, IDOL, based on American Idol. It lasted one performance.

Missypie, yes you made a mistake by renting the horrible movie of Xanadu. That's like saying you took the kids to a real spelling bee so they'd want to see "Spelling Bee" on Broadway.
Or even renting the John Walters version of Hairspray before seeing the musical. I think both those plans would backfire on you too.

What makes Xanadu on Broadway funny is that it is NOTHING like the movie and is at its funniest by spoofing how bad the movie is.

A friend of mine loves Mary Poppins--she has seen it several times. She says the theater is beautiful and that the special effects are amazing.

On a recent trip I saw Curtains, which stars David Hyde Pierce. He and the rest of the cast are completely wonderful. The show is very tuneful and the story is fun. Discount tickets may be available on www.broadwaybox.com

We saw Mary Poppins. Of the three shows we saw, we liked it the least. It didn't have the "sparkle" that I expect from a Disney show. I was actually dozing during the first act. (Thinking, "I can't believe I'm dozing off during a Broadway musical.") There are a lot of Mr. and Mrs. Banks scenes that drag.

It really picked up during the second act. I guess they saved their money to end big.

I also loved being in that theatre. As you walk to the restrooms, there are lots of photos on the wall of the vaudeville stars who appeared there.

I may have missed it in the long thread, but what three shows did you wind up seeing and what would you now recommend? Did you get the tickets in advance or at TCKTS?

As someone who has been going to musicals since I was a kid and saw Mary Martin in Peter Pan, "Curtains" with David Hyde Pierce, is one of the best new musicals I have seen in years.

The plot is extremely clever. The lyrics are great. Wonderful dance. I have been taking dance for decades and thought Pierce was wonderful in his dance numbers.

The only problem that I had was my cheeks were literally sore from smiling so much.

Strong second choice would be Drowsy Chaperone.
