What are the acronyms?
I keep seeing DH and DD etc.....just wanting to know the correct meaning of these words... everytime I see DH my first inclination is that someone is traveling with their designated hitter and DD Designated Driver....
I have a gut feeling that they simply aren't making it clear to the masses. |
Dear Husband, Dear Daughter, Dear Son ... |
we don't see reference to DW too often tho....I wonder why.
BTW, OP means original poster or original post, in case you were wondering about that one. |
And BTW means by the way ;)
You can google web acronyms (or abbreviations) or something similar and usually find a pretty good list. Not all abbreviations are consistent among all message boards, but it will give you an idea. |
By the end of a long trip with family, sometimes they mean Dreaded Husband ...
And don't forget TTT
ToTheTop :D |
IMO = I my opinion.
The D can stand for all sorts of things, dumb, ditsy, d@mn, you can the idea from the context of the message. IL changes F, father, to FIL Father in law. SO is significant other and implies a relationship other than mere friendship although the gender of the SO is not mentioned. SP indicate Partner and is usually, but not always, a gay/lesbian partnership. Combinations can be worked in. Such as DSO's MIL. Dear Signigicant Other's Mother in law. Which tell's you more than you want to know about the relationship.
If you want to be modest: IMHO (in my humble opinion).
OTOH on the other hand
OMG there's too many to list LOL!
IMNSHO- in my not so humble opinion
IIRC - If I Remember Correctly (took me forever to figure this one out).
My housekeeper has decided to make up her own cybercodes....I got an email earlier this week..."Is it SF or FC for DINDIN?"..Turns out she wanted to know if I wanted stir fry or fried chicken for dinner.....:D
The acronyms are a code used by those who believe they are "in" and who strive to bewilder others whom they view as "out."
Thanks for the clarification--something the acronyms don't do.
ht2u-or they just have lazy fingers ... lol w/luv s
ISO = in search of
Just remember: SFO is NOT San Francisco. It's the airport only. Common mistake on this website.
OK, but why put the "D" in front of it??? Why not just say "H" for husband or "W" for wife???? And why the word "dear???"
dorky
dimwitted darlin' dastardly doopy droopy dang but I still prefer "dear" :) |
SOB = well you know that one
Airport codes are great abbreviations world wide, imho or imnsho.
Sorry the SFO'ers are the only naysayers. M (TA local expert SMdA, Gto., MX) |
LOL, mikemo is the acronym Extraordinaire!! :D
The one that took forever for me to figure out was OT. Now I know it is for "off topic".
TTYL - talk to you later!!
Howdy Sam,
SOB = Short of Breath Used lots in health care. Now that patients have the option to read their own charts (hurray!), I hope they don't think it means anything else! :) |
Not used so much here, but you'll see them on other travel boards:
TA: Travel agent. FA: flight attendant GA: Gate agent. |
SO = mi novia/su novio = "significant other" as I am too old to refer to GF (girl friend(s) and she to BF (boy friend(s).
Los abuelos (grandparents) use novio(a) here and it even sounds a bit romantic, lol. M |

YMMV - your mileage may vary. Used to indicate that while something works for some people it may not work for others or success depends on the situation.
I saw DL last week. Was it a typo?
Dear Lover? Loser? I guess the context of the message would have to clue you in to that one.
DL: Sometimes used for driver's license. Did this come up in one of the many "Should I carry my passport/ID" threads?
