We are going to Gettysburg and Harper's Ferry for a 4day weekend
OO
As I said before, This is our third season boatless and we sure miss it so I am jealous. We always sailed to Chicago for the weekend and July 3rd fireworks.
Happy 4th everyone!

I'm sorry, cd! It hasn't gotten any easier? Maybe a new and better one is in your future...roller furling jib AND main. (My DH has said "what if we sell and do that...later"). I sure would love a roller furling main, but these things take on personalities and I'm attached to her. Lots of love; lots of blood sweat and tears in her varnish. Lots of achy bones after spending hours on my knees doing the varnish. On second thought: BOAT FOR SALE
GoT... I'm ROFLMAO!...drag anchor AND hit another boat AND almost run aground. That must have been quite a day! Did you make it to West End?

OO, we made it to the West End of Grand Bahama Island in something like 17 hours.
This was back in the early nineties before GPS was widespread and affordable (handheld, HA! A boat GPS would cost around $10,000). Two miles offshore, our LORAN went kaput! Holy cow no nav tools! Ah to be young and stupid again. Let's sail across the Atlantic in a 32 foot boat with no navigation besides a compass.
No navigational equipment so we relied on other boats.
Finally, finally, LAND HO! Remember the old Jack Tar Resort? We were heading to the Jack Tar Marina and BAM! We run hard aground.
I swear on my cats this story is true.
Here we are, sun setting, hard aground, wondering what to do when all of a sudden this dingy comes roaring up beside us and ON our boat jumps a ONE ARMED SAILOR!! Yes, one armed sailor.
He threw my three girlfriends and I on the boom, released the boom flinging us out over the water, displacing the weight of the boat, and popping us off the rocks.
On we went heading into Jack Tar Marina for showers, power (AC), and a restaurant.
We get to shore awaiting customs and immigration and this massive black Lincoln Limo from 1972 comes pulling up and offers to drive us to dinner. At this point, we are like, why not?
Why not indeed, it was the freshest conch I've ever eaten with the coldest kalik beers on the planet.
Remind me at some point to tell the story about using the wench to crush ice before I threw it overboard.

Hi OO
She was a great boat with main roller furling! Maybe if we could find a marina in Cleveland or Sandusky OH that was like Michigan City IN we might consider another boat but so far we have not. We had a locked gated community with sucurity at night and brand new docks and Lake Michigan is not choppy like Lake Erie. Oh well.. we have good memories. Have a good time!

Multiple family reunions in Oklahoma--one big one near Claremore and smaller ones in Oklahoma City. Picnic at Lake Hefner.
Byrd, after your mention of homemade peach ice cream, I think that will be added to the menu! (altho it will probably be Bluebell and not homemade!)
Happy travels everyone

Zipping out to Ohio on Saturday AM...zipping back Monday afternoon. Hopefully we'll be back to NYC in time to watch the fireworks from our window. I think we'd better allow 8 hours driving time (ugh)!

Great story GT. Amazingly, we all grew up despite our best efforts, didn't we! LOL That's a great creative use for a wench by the way, but a rather expenisve jettison though! I mean...how are you going to crush ice now without a wench (handle, I hope, not the wench)!
cd...that is our problem too so far! Terrific marina, locked gates, nice new finger piers, pump out, water and electriciy in St Pete. Not so terrific on the lake and MORE expensive. And we weorry that sailing on a lake will get boring. You know the drill it sounds like.

Heading to the Cape. We are really looking forward to a few days of relaxation now that the kids are out of school. Actually, my son still has a half day tomorrow, thanks to all that snow we had in Massachusetts this winter! Hope to do nothing but eat, drink, ride our bikes, and maybe catch some fireworks for the first couple of days.
On Monday, we decorate the kids' bikes and wagon and they ride in a parade with hundreds and hundreds of other kids (and all their overheated, semi-crazed parents). But it's fun. It's the same parade I used to be in when I was little, but back then, there were WAY fewer kids. Few enough that they used to hand out ribbons for the best decorations. We actually found an article in a drawer that my grandmother had saved listing the winners. I was in it and so was my husband and his brothers! I was only about 5 or 6. I didn't know him yet because they were "summer people!"
After the parade, we have a party at a friends. Then, in the evening, we all walk down to the duck pond, where a band plays oldies music and we watch the boat parade. People spend the whole day decorating their canoes and row boats with lanterns and such and then parade past the bank of the pond when it gets dark. The boat that gets the loudest applause wins. Another event from my childhood. It's so much fun reliving those moments with you own children!

Peace and quiet, huh? Sounds lovely GoTravel
For the first part of the weekend, we are going to commune with nature on our first ever camping trip
Then the oldest son and GF are heading into Philadelphia to see Elton John and the youngest son will be working at the local chain store making lattes.
My DH and I will be resting on the deck enjoying our peace and quiet
Have a wonderful 4th of July!

Head to Corbett, OR (in the Gorge) for the parade, but then the kids are insisting on doing fireworks here at home. Our street does a HUGE party and everyone joins in. All the grills are brought out to the street and it becomes on big potlock.
Sunbum--I think we will be at the blues festival on Saturday.

Let's see...dh has three days off but we're staying home. We'll pick up some fireworks Sunday to set off in our driveway Monday evening. We might go to a friend's house Monday as well since she has a good view of her city's fireworks.
Sometimes we go to the Isotopes fireworks since the crowds are a little smaller and it's easier to get home, but I don't know that we'll do that this year.
Mr. Pickle will read us the Declaration of Independence sometime during the day as well.

I'm headed on Friday with my Portland police officer neighbor to Vancouver, WA to buy the best illegal (in Oregon) fireworks we can find. We'll "do" them together at the neighborhood party on the 4th (ours sounds a lot like yours, mms). Does the fact that I'm doing illegal fireworks with a policeman make it okay?

We have some company coming this week-end and Sunday my DH and brother will go see the Padres. Other then that- blissfully no plans! Nothing to do except read, visit and try to convince my dog that fireworks are not evil invaders. Maybe she'll come out from under the desk this year.
