Whale Watching Kauai
 

On my second trip to Kauai comng up in February '03, my one goal is to see some whales, preferably up close. What is the best way to do this?<BR><BR>Zodiac, or big party boat, or are there places from shore that you get to see just as much for free for as long as you want.<BR><BR>Any advice and experiences with specific tour operator information is greatly appreciated!<BR><BR>Thanks Fodors Forumettes, you never fail me!

I can't speak specifically for Kauai, but I highly recommend whale watching. The first time I did it, my parents &quot;forced&quot; me, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable things I ever did. It is awesome. Just don't use your nose when they clear their blowhole.

It has happened to me on several occasions. (Boston, Bar Harbor--maybe they were rude Northeastern whales and the laid back Hawaiian whales will excrete their blowholes more privately and civilly).

The poipu area has a pretty good concentration of whales. Koloa landing/Whalers cove area is a good viewing area. Also near the spouting horn. The are whale watching tours, with Capt. Andy being the best.

I would use a boat. Or just go to Sea World and have brunch with Shamu.

We just got back from Kauai on 1-16 and saw a whole lotta whales from shore.<BR>We could smell &quot;smelt breath&quot; all over the beaches. ;-)<BR>Saw them on every coast but up near Kilauea Lighthouse. The problem with going during the winter months and taking one of the tours is sometimes the surf on the NoShore is VERY high and you have to consider the seasick factor.<BR>When we were over, they had closed Hanalei and Haena beaches due to waves of 20'+. <BR>Rumor had it at night the NoShore surf was to reach the 40' level but who stays up that late over there?<BR>We always carried our little set of hi-powered binos and they really helped. Next year Mrs Kal will be getting, and carrying her own!<BR><BR>We got a really good view of them one year from Poipu Beach. The bottom drops off quickly so they can come in closer.<BR>Good luck and have fun,<BR>Kal

My husband and I went on HolaHola whale tour! Included champagne at sunset and appetizer foods. Saw whales, too!
