Whale watching in June
 

We are going to be visiting the coast of California, end of June and we would like to know if there is a better place, from Monterey to Los Angeles, to watch the whales.
Is it better to go on whale watching tours in the morning or in the afternoon?

Most of the legit whale tour places post their daily whale count. Just check their websites, call or stop by the pier and ask what they've spotted in the last week. It varies from year to year a bit.

The blues are just now starting to show up in Southern California.

I would recommend whale watching in Monterey County, I am partial because I live and work here. During the months from April to November, the Monterey Bay becomes a feeding ground for various summer whales; Humpback, Blue, Fin, Minke, and Ora (Killer Whales). Also, you're bound to see California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, Sea Otters, sea birds, and other marine life.

Monterey Bay Whale Watch keeps a record of the date, number and type of animal sighted. For each day they have a record of sightings for both trips, morning and afternoon. Here is the month of June from last year, this might help you determine tour would like to attend. I hope this helps you out!

I work for the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Center, it is my job to make sure you enjoy your visit to the area.

Sheena, since you work for the Visitors Center, you might want to read my above post where I give the link to current whale sightings, rather than last years. The whales follow their food, eg is there is no krill, there won't be any blues.

At the moment Santa Barbara is more of a whale hotspot than is Monterey Bay.
