Whale watching in Boston or Maine

Should we whale watch in Bar harbor or Boston in July. We are going to both places, and a little short on time in BH. Thought Boston as an alternative. Is one recommeded over the other?

Thanks
Christina

I think the whale watches in Boston have to go furthur to get to the viewing areas. Hence you have less time to actually see whales, and a greater chance of missing out. That said, I think July is a good time of year for it, so maybe you'll have good luck.

Last 2 years I've gone out twice, once from Boston in May, and once from Providence in June. We saw no whales on either trip. The Boston one was marred by rough water that forced them to turn back early. They couldn't get far enough out in time to see the whales.

I've never been on the whale watch out of Bar Harbor, so I can't compare directly. But I think your odds are slightly better.

that is what I was thinking...bar Harbor. it will just cut our time short in Acadia Nt. Park...cannot be helped. Not enough time to do everything.

by the way, I mis-typed in the above posting. I meant "Provincetown" not "Providence".

it's a tough choice. I don't know how long you'll be in Acadia. If you are going there before Boston, you can always decide on the fly. if you are so taken with Acadia that you want to do more hiking and such, then just hold off on the whale watch.

I'm going to Acadia also, in August. I haven't been for about 10 years. I look forward to hearing how you liked it, and any recommendations for things to do or places to eat.

I will post. We are going for 3 days in July, then down to kennebunk, for 3 days, then Boston for 5, then fly home.

Between Bar Harbor and Boston you will pass through Newburyport which has great whale watching and you will not be far from Rockport where there is also good whale watching.

While I've never been whale watching in Maine, the watches in Boston are typically very good. I've taken several and all my experiences have been great! You might also want to couple the whale watch with a trip to the Boston aquarium.
