Whale Watch - Maine or Cape Cod?

We will be visiting Portland Maine, Cape Cod, and Newport this July. We have been to all of these places before, but have never been on a whale watch. We actually will have the most time available in Portland, so we are thinking of trying the whale watch then. However, I don't see as much info. on whale watch cruises in Portland as I do in Cape Cod. Has anyone taken a whale watch cruise from any of these places? Suggestions, recommendations?

Stellwagen Bank where the whales are is just off the tip of Provincetown on Cape Cod. WW boats out of Provincetown have a quick trip out and back which leaves most of the time to look for whales.

I would guess that the opposite is true in Portland, that it is a long trip out and back leaving just a short time to look for the whales.

Gene is right, it is a 45 min. trip to and from the Bans, and you are usually out there for at least 2-3 hours. Cape Cod is the departure point of choice.

Thank you both so much. We will plan accordingly.

We did the afternoon boat from Captain John Boats out of Plymouth and had a great time. Check their internet site for discount coupon.
