whale or dolphin watch in Wildwood Crest area
Does anybody have experience with whale or dolphin watch in Wildwood Crest area. on google I found a few company which sail from Cape May (Cape May Whale Watcher)and Wildwood crest (Atlantic Star). Not sure if they are reputable. Can you see whales or dolphin at all in NJ?
Thanks for any info, Mariya |
Hi Mariya
I have been on the Cape May boat,4th grade class trip with my dd.We did see dolphins and a lot of sea birds. It was alot of fun for the kids. Whales do migrate past Cape May,but I am not sure how often they are seen. In the summer you can see dolphins from the beach all most every day. If you do go on the Cape May boat, be sure to go across the street to the Lobster House. It is nice to sit out on the docks and have something to eat.Even us locals enjoy it. Susan |
HI
I am writing this from the Jersey shore. Whale Watching is usually thought of as out of Cape May. The boat(s) dock across from the Lobster House Restauant near the entrance into town. Yes, they do spot whales. I've gone twice. The first time we had a humpback right along side the boat. It was also as large as the boat. The next time - just some dolphin. For whales, it depends on the weather and the water temperature. It is my understanding that earlier (cooler water) affords greater chances of success. From the southern NJ beaches dolphin can be seen at any time. They seem to prefer warmer water. They follow the fish that they eat. We saw some just this morning. As a rule, you are more likely to see them early in the day so those who sleep in have fewer chances. As far as reputation, all of the boats are carefully and frequently inspected by the Coast Guard which is located right in Cape May. What they can locate in the water is out of their control. Some of them used to provide a reduced price offer for a second trip if the first one failed to spot a whale. It is entirely possible to call and ask them what they've seen in their last trip out. I hope that this long post is helpful to you. |
Thanks for all the info!
Is there any places near by for berry picking? Would that be a season yet? Can I rent a bycicle in Wildwood crest? There is no boardwalk there, is there any nice places near the beach to ride a bycicle? |
When are you going? Strawberries just finished.I can't think of any pick your own places.
Try to fit in a visit to the zoo,it is very nice and free. |
WE will be there Jul 01-04

Early risers can rent a bike (or bring you own) and ride it on the boardwalk through Wildwood and North Wildwood - a pretty long ride. I'm not sure of the regulations in Wildwood but riding the boardwalk is usually allowed until around 10AM.
July 1-4 is VERY busy at the Jersey shore. It is the most intense time of all. Stay for the night of July 4, if you can. If the weather allows, there will be fireworks on the beach in many of the coastal towns. July is blueberry time in mid/south Jersey. Generally you don't pick your own although there may be some places that allow it. Blueberry farmers are centered around Hammonton, NJ. |
Thanks for the info!
