Westwater Rafting Trip, Moab, UT

We wil be in Moab beginning of Oct., and have booked a full day white water rafting trip on Westwater Canyon. We have only been on one rafting trip previously, on a tamer section of the Grand Canyon. Is there anything we should be concerned about, and is there anything we should bring along with us?

Hi Lois,

How fun! Westwater in Oct will probably not be too wild. I haven't done it myself, but I think its rapids are only Class III and water is usually pretty low that late in the season.

Take the same stuff you did on your other trip: quick drying clothes, long sleeves, windbreaker, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses with STRAPS. River sandals or old tennies you never need to wear (ever) again, unless you like pink.

Who are you going with?

Dayle, thanks for the advice. Actually, although I'm on this trip as well, the only two actually doing Westwater Canyon are my daughters. I'm 'just' the worried mother :] I'm good at finding things to worry about, and they humor me.

Lois, I think Dayle meant" what rafting company" when she asked you you were going with, but I could be wrong??

Quick drying clothes and SOCKS, means no cotton [in case you have forgotten].

Chap Stick and Sunblock, we still have lots of sun here even if the water levels are low.

I agree, it will be pretty tame on the river.

Deb,

How funny! Of course that's what Dayle meant! I don't know, as it is being booked by the lodge we are staying at. And, thanks for your tips. My girls probably know, but I definitely did not know NO cotton. And, since they only did one whitewater raft trip, and it was a few years ago, I will be happy to refresh their memories with what they will need.

What is weather usually like in early Oct.?

Yes, Lois, I did mean rafting outfitter. If you are staying at the Red Cliffs Lodge, then you will probably be going with Western River Expeditions. They do a lot of business together.

Early Oct will probaby be in the low 80's during the day, but it feels a lot cooler when you are on the water. It's always possible to have an early cold front come through, so go prepared with a warm layer and a rain layer.

Thank you for all the advice, and for the name of the outfitter for the raft trip. I checked out their site, and it looks great. I loved our last trip to the area, and I;m really looking forward to returning.
