Westin Wigwam or Sheraton Wild Horse Pass in Phoenix, Arizona?
 

To be correct, the Westin Wigwam is in Litchfield Park and the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort is in Chandler. Both near Phoenix.

I cannot decide between the two: both have good and bad reviews. Will be attending a conference in Phoenix in February and do like to golf - both resorts have golf courses on site. I really like the Westin Kierland, because it also is adjacent to the Kierland Commons where they have shops and restaurents. The Kierland is just too expensive at that time of the year.

I can get a room at the Wild Horse Pass for $290 a night, a smaller room with "preferred view", including American breakfast. Their golging is a bit more expensive ($125). Wignwam is $309 with a bigger room but only facing the garden. Their golf is cheaper ($80)

I believe both Wigwam and Wild Horse Pass are quite "isolated" - no shops/other restaurents within walking distance.

Any advices would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry but both are very isolated and far away from anything - destination resorts, so to speak. The Sheraton has advantages, IMO, of being newer, having gambling and being closer to the highway 10, which will get you to restaurants, shopping, etc. quickly. Chandler itself has quite a lot to offer so no need to go to Phoenix. Litchfield Park is waaaay out there, but the Wigwam will have more charm and old west style. Neither will compare to the Westin Kierland.

The golf is better at Wildhorse Pass. And you're definitely closer to more things. It will take about 20 minutes (with no traffic) to get to downtown Tempe, which has a quite a few restaurants to chose from. Chandler Fashion Mall will also be about the same. Wigwam is more in town than it used to be, but it's still way out there.

How important is it to be near the conference? (don't forget rush hour)

There is no lack of golf anywhere in Phoenix! Are you renting a car? Or not.. important when making those choices too.

Central Phoenix for the conference?

The conference is in central Phoenix. I will have a car, and so the commute between the conference and hotel/resort is not important for me.

I am looking for feedback on the difference between the 2 hotels. Personally I prefer a more quiet hotel (not overrun with kids and party type), good choice of on-site restaurants, quality of room, amenities and friendliness of the staff.

I posted the same question on Tripadvisor, and someone answered that the Wigwam rooms are all casitas. Although the hotel is much older than the Sheraton WHP, it looks like Wigwam would suit me more.

I suspect you will be disappointed with both. Why not just pop for the Kierland for part of your time, and stay somewhere cheap for 1-2 nights? really, you're not gonna be happy with either of these places and the traffic from teh conference will be awful.

You will face a lot of awful traffic coming from either of these places if you have to drive between 6-9 AM and 3-6 PM. Helps if you have one other person so you can use the carpool lanes, but still driving to central PHX from, say, SWHP is miserable during rush hour.

Ya, I agree with Bill and JKGourmet. The underestimation of the time of travel will put a damper on time spent here.

I would take a close look at these places

1.Hyatt Regency Dowtown
2.Biltmore
3.Tapatio Cliff - Hilton
4.Phoenician

All of these are quiet. Great restaurants inside and all surrounded by golf courses. I believe the Biltmore and the Phoenician are the two with courses on property. Tapatio Cliffs has Lookout Mountain.

All by some great dining inside and out.

Can you tell we are leaning away from the advice of having you stay in the boonies!? :)

O.K. here is the truth.

The conference will be at the Phoenix Conference Center, and the conference hotel is the Hyatt Regency on 2nd street, where I can get a good conference rate.

However the conference is an excuse to go golfing in Phoenix, so I do not plan to stay the entire day in the conference.

The Wigwam and the Sheraton WHP are the only &quot;decent resorts&quot; (with golf course) where I can get a room for $300. Resorts like Westin Kierland, Phoenician charges in the order of ~$400-500 a night, and I cannot claim that much for business expense (my boss will either strangle me, or ban me from travelling for the next 10 years)

So if I have to settle for lower price, that means I have to travel farther. yes, if money is no obstacle I would stay at the Phoenician or the Kierland, or even the Camelback (even though their golf course is not on their property - ~3 mins away.)

I stayed at the Sheraton Wild Horse. The golf course looked really nice though I did not take advantage of it. It is a bit isolated but I think you'd be okay. There's a casino there too but its not much unless you need a few hours to kill or you are a hard core gambler.

I would just stay downtown at the Hyatt and then drive out to golf. If you put in a token appearance at the conference and then go golfing you won't face much traffic.

If you have an early tee time somewhere you will be driving against the main traffic flow to get to a golf course.

&quot;Problem&quot; solved: Westin Kierland just posted a sales: I can get a regular room for ~$280 (and preferred view for $300). Their regular rate in January is $368 for a regular room. Plus, I get a $100 credit per stay. So Kierland it is.

oooo aaaah. You will like! The Phoenix open (TPC) course, Talking Stick and Troon North are short drives from there as well!(golf courses).

Kierland commons has all the dining you will need!

Kierland is in a better location, but you're still going to have a long drive in a lot of traffic from there.
