Westin Century City Plaza or the W in LA?

Which is the nicer hotel? Is it close to good shopping and Santa Monica? What is the best way to get around LA without renting a car? Is one of these hotels in a better location than the other? Thanks for your help!

They're both fine. The Westin CC Plaza is close to the Century City Shopping Center (a Westfield mall, unfortunately, but it's a nice environment).

The W is the old Westwood Marquis, which is a VERY nice hotel in Westwood. The Westwood Village area is just south of the UCLA campus, so there's a lot to do there.

Both hotels are not far from Santa Monica. You can technically take buses straight down the main drags (Santa Monica Blvd for the Westin, Wilshire Blvd for the W). But it's just easier to rent a car, frankly. Most cities in the West are not set up for non-auto commuting.

In any rate, you'll be fine with either property. And enjoy your stay in LA!

Just to add to this-in case you really do decide not to rent a car-the kinds of shopping in C City and Wetlake Mall are a little different.........they both have some movie theaters-Westwood Village is more like a university district so there are 3 or 4 theaters in a 4 05 block area whereas the CC shopping center has a multi-screen complex. The CC shopping area has a Pottery Barn, a couple big dept. stores, etc. whereas Westwood Village doesn't really have a dept. stroe but has lots of little "studenty" places to eat (a couple nicer ones too) and also has kind of a fun Farmers Market on Thursday afternoons. They both have a supermarket in the area if you care-both are good areas -safe to walk and good bus service if you are really anti-car rental.

If you have to go with no car (which I do not suggest) then I'd consider the W over the Westin.

The W is 1/2 block from a Santa Monica Blue Bus stop with buses running late that will take you easily to the major bus lines on Wilshire, Santa Monica, and Pico Blvds. Also, because the W is near UCLA and in Westwood, it will be livelier at night with more restaurants open late and people walking around. Finally, it is the more "hip" hotel if that matters.

Century City is geared more toward business people and closes up earlier. It would also be a longer walk to a bus line. The mall does have restaurants, a movie complex, and a good food court but - especially now that it is a Westfield - wouldn't be a place I'd hang out on vacation. On the plus side, the Westin has a great pool, upscale restaurant and spa if that matters.

Both are in great locations. If you enjoy shopping, you're better off at the Century Plaza. The No. 5 Blue Bus can be caught on Constellation Blvd., right around the corner from the hotel. That bus goes straight down Olympic, and ends at Santa Monica & 4th, right in the heart of downtown Santa Monica. Just so you know, in Santa Monica, the street that runs along the beach is Ocean Ave., then heading east towards Westwood, the streets are numbered 2 through 26. So 4th street is 4 blocks from the beach.

On the number 5, you can get off at Westwood Blvd. and transfer to the number 8, which will take you up to UCLA. Or, you can get off the 8 at Westwood & Santa Monica and transfer to the number 1, which will take you down Santa Monica Blvd. all the way to the beach as well.

The blue bus is a great mode of transportation (now costs 75 cents a ticket) and is used by many UCLA students, since parking on campus is tight. You can find their schedules and routes at www.bigbluebus.com.

The W has really good specials, and I think they recently changed it to an all suite hotel. It's a great place to eat and go to the movies -- a great student hang-out, but the shopping (which used to be great) disintegrated with the building of all of the malls with entertainment centers.

The mall in Century City has two restaurants, Houston's (great ribs) and Gulf Stream (great fish), as well as the marketplace, which has a variety of foods for every taste.

When we were teens, we used to hang out in Westwood Village (at the "Dog House" -- now a parking structure). Now they all hang out at Century City mall (I will NEVER call it Westfield, which it only recently became).
