Westchester County 2 Weeks Need Food and Fun Help!

Hello all~
We are going to be in White Plains in December for 2 weeks while a family member has surgery at the Westchester Medical Center. We will probably stay at the Residence Inn there as it has spacious rooms and a full kitchen (other hotel recommendations welcome!) and the Ritz Carlton for the last 2 nights for a treat! Any advice of great restaurants and bars in the area? We love great food and wine and know very little about the area... We will take a couple of day trips into Manhattan before the surgery, but will have loads of time in White Plains/Tarrytown and any suggestions for food and fun would be most welcome~ Thank you so much!

I'm sure you'll get lots of advice, but until then, you can go to maps.google.com and map the hotel or the medical center and then use the "search nearby" function for restaurants (some even with reviews) or anything else you'd like.

You're not far from Sleepy Hollow there where they may have some nice Xmas events. http://www.hudsonvalley.org/content/view/96/160/

Blue Hill at Stone Barns is a wonderful restaurant near Tarrytown.

Blue Hill at Stone Barnsis definitely one of the best in the area, but you may already be too late to make reservations. Call them now--914-366-9600.
Another highly recommended one is Harvest-on-Hudson in Hastings-on-Hudson. Excellent. Phone: 914-478-2800

I like Crabtree's Kittle House - near Mt Kisco

http://www.kittlehouse.com/

It's still a bit of a drive (at least an hour), but the Culinary Institute is always special.

There's also the Castle in Tarrytown which is very nice as well.

For things to do fairly nearby:

Beat Mountain Stte Park - if the weather co-operates

West Point Military Academy

FDR's home at Hyde Park

Rockefeller Estate at Kyukit (sp?)

But do check - since places may well have much shorter hours in Dec - and it will get dark very early.

This was just in the NY Times today.

http://events.nytimes.com/2008/11/23...taurant&st=cse

I worked in the area and it was always a standard. It is very close to the Medical Center.

I have been gone from the area for 8 years, but let me see if I can find some old favorites that will work for you[IF they are still around].

The village of Valhalla has a great deli on the corner, facing the train station. There was also a terrific little pizza place, just up the hill next to post office [Ah Pizza, maybe?].

I'll try for some more.

There is also a deli across from log cabin restaurant that is very good and there was a pizza place in the same little center.

This is a bit of a drive [Saw Mill Parkway north to the end and then merge onto 684 north. Take the exit for Goldens Bridge and then head into the A&P shopping center:

best BEST italian food -- Portofino's or better known as Dominick's by his long time loyal customers.

Not sure if these are still around:
Graziella's, White Plains
Azzurri, Thornwood
Silvio's, Thornwood
Casa Rina, Thornwood
Gavi, Armonk

Not fancy but good eats, any diner on Rt 119.

Deb

I had dinner there every Friday night from 1982 until I moved to SW in 2001. My kids grew up eating his excellent pizza and learned to love italian food at his elbow.

It is not fancy. You go in and order your food. You sit down. You get your drinks [beer and wine available, but nothing fancy]. They bring your food. You eat. You go and pay and you leave happy as can be.

He does standard italian favorites but also does great fish and seafood. His salads are good too. The pizza can be had in huge slices or by the pie.

It is the first place I eat when I go back to visit. I eat there as many times as I can. I have tried to bribe him to move out here and told him I would back a restaurant. Can't persuade him to do so -- much to my dismay and to the great delight of his numerous fans. Friday night is crazy, Saturday is better suprisingly.

For Fun:

Tarrytown Music Hall (check schedule for concerts/movies)
Paramount Center for the Arts (Peekskill), check schedule for concerts
Rockefeller State Park/Stone Barns (tons of walking trails, some with amazing views of the Hudson River), visitor center is on 117 and they will provide mapes, free parking during the week for seniors.
City center - White Plains, live theatre and huge movie complex
Sunnyside Mansion, winter wonderlights show, check out hudson valley.org, there are three other mansions, all worth visiting, Van Cortlandt Manor is also decorated for the holidays.

Food:
Casual neightborhood pub type places /fun sports bars - Pete's Saloon and Demeters , Horsefeathers(within 1 mile of the Residence Inn), there's also a Fridays, but I avoid that like the plague.

Italian - A'Mangiare (casual) and Almoramas, casual. In Tarrytown there's Lago del Como, excellent, but pricey.
Ruth Chris is also close by and the Tarrytown Castle is decorated beautifully this time of year. If you don't have dinner there, make sure you have a drink.

Down by the water in TT, there's Striped Bass and Sunset Cove, food is decent, not too terribly expensive, great views of the Hudson/Tappen Zee Bridge.

In Irvington, next town south from TT, there's One and Red Hat, both on the Hudson. There's also Mimo Vinoteca on Main Street, a casual Italian wine bar w/great food.

Yonkers has X2O, another excellent choice for a splurge.

Crabtree Kittle House is known for it's wine list and fine food.

White Plains is kind of like a mini NYC, Ritz Carlton has BLT Steak, there's Peniche on the top floor (tapas place). We really like Tango Argentina, again, it's pricey. For good Indian, Bengal Tiger.....

This is my backyard, please feel free to ask for more advise, in the meantime, I hope this gets you started.

Sorry, my last post got messed up.

The comments got chopped up; this is how it should have been written; it is all about Portofino's/Dominics.

You are not too far from the Bronx Zoo! I think they have their holiday lights up (check website)
They also have a toy train spectacular set up using 'natural material' to reproduce some NY City landmarks. Very Nice!

Eat: Arthur Avenue which is a few blocks from the zoo (great Italian)

Just an Idea!

I would not waste the time to go up to the Culinary Inst. in Hyde Park...it's far, and can be spotty, although, you have a substantial amount of time, so I suppose that's not an issue. Another poster referenced the restaurants in the Ritz Carlton (BLT Steak...but the other one on the top floor is called 42--not Peniche). 42 would be good for a splurge, or better yet, just make a res. for drinks there and you will experience the view...but eat in BLT Steak. Peniche is a Tappas Restaurant about a block away..also worthwhile. Another place right there that's good is Via Quadronno. There is a Legal Seafoods almost across the Street (stay away from Zanaro's though), and there is a new chain fondue restaurant (The Melting Pot), but I've never been to this location. I wouldn't bother with the Log Cabin Restaurant...too many others. I highly recommend heading south a bit to Hastings on Hudson to a restaurant call "Harvest on Hudson" it's pretty and romantic. Agree with the posters too about X20--worth a try, and so is Blue Hill at Stone Barns...both these are splurges (as is BLT Steak). If you give some parameters to other types of restaurants or price points I can give more suggestions...there are many restaurants!! Good luck! (I'm going to Monterey around Christmas myself!!)

Thank you so very much!!! These are some amazing ideas~
I will be on my own for the most time during the recovery after the surgery so this should keep me pretty busy! I am going to do some research on the recommendations and make a plan....
I am so grateful for this forum~

Valerie, do you need any help with Monterey??? I have lived here my whole life~

Hi Sarah,

Yes, would love some suggestions (although Christmas day itself, I am flying into San Francisco and I suppose will spend at least that day there...maybe going to China Town which of course will have open restaurants...and riding a cable car which also still open). I fly home the Monday after Christmas but from the Monterey airport...so I really only have four full days. The friend I'm visiting lives in Marina...not sure what he's planning for me, but as I said any "must sees" would be great. It seems a little off season to bother going into wine country from SF... Sarah...one more thing, I saw someone suggested the NY Botanical Garden's Holiday Train Show (the NY Botanical Garden is in the Bronx...and yes, it's also close to the Bronx Zoo which does it's own holiday light event)...anyway, I just saw the train show on Friday, and it's really different and very neat to see! So, I agree with that recommendation. If you want to email directly, let me know. Valerie
