West Nile virus and South Carolina ?
 

This might be considered a stupid question by many, but where I live we don't have any mosquitos (i.e. San Francisco Bay Area)-- at least I haven't seen any. We have plans to see Charleston and Savannah at the beginning of October. Will this still be a "mosquito season" ? West Niles stories make it to CNN every single day. I've used insect repellent and was bitten anyway on my recent trip - so I'm worried. <BR>Thanks in advance for your ideas.

We live in South Carolina and mosquito season is year-round(lessens a bit in the winter). However, most cities, large and small, consistently spray for mosquitos. I've nevered been bothered by alot of mosquitos when I've been walking around the downtown areas of either of the two cities you mentioned. Definitely wear the insect repellent if you'll be in natural areas mornings and evenings.

You want a DEET-based product for maximum effectiveness. Here's one to take a look at:<BR><BR>http://www.gearshark.com/finder/details/%203M-UltraThon/6717.html<BR><BR>Cutter has always been the very best mosquito repellent that I could find and I used to get myself into some places where they were so thick you could hear a high-pitched "hum" when you opened the car door! Good luck and remember that while it pays to take precautions, your chances of contracting West Nile virus are still relatively small.

Off has a "deep woods" protection in a green aeresol can. It has 24% DEET---I don't know how that compares to Cutter, but it is what I use. Don't worry too much about West Nile - if you are in good health, my doctor said it usually is only like having the flu.

I don't think mosquitos should be of any concern at all unless you go for a hike near the marshes. Especially in October. I live in upstate SC where I might see a mosquito once a week. I was in Charleston a couple of weeks ago, can't remember seeing any. <BR><BR>Also, word is if you are not elderly or otherwise immune-impaired, West Nile won't be a big problem. AND, looks like West Nile is head out west to meet you anyway. Have a nice trip!
