Wells to Stowe 2 nights will we have trouble finding a room? 8 & 9 Oct!

We've booked one night in Wells for Wed 7 Oct and then the Sat, Sun & Monday nights of the Columbus Day long weekend in Stowe Vt.
Which leaves thurs & Fri nights with no booking. We were hoping to not book and just see where we end up but as its a Friday night before a long weekend I'm thinking we may have trouble finding somewhere on the day and may not be able to get a room for one night.

Thoughts?

I would suggest checking cancellation policies and then making reservations you can cancel within 24 hours. Find something on your approximate route between the two places. The distance between the two isn't huge even if you have to go an hour out of your way. Friday night might be difficult. People start long weekends early. I commute on Rt 93 thru NH and there's a lot of traffic every Friday night most of the year. I'm betting you'll find it hard to leave the Maine coast but two nights somewhere in NH (lakes or mountains) would be nice. NH's mountains are different than VT's. BTW I like your sense of adventure because nice surprises are always fun but foliage season is probably the busiest of the entire year.

Again, thank you, your a wonderful source of ideas on this forum. I was thinking of booking somewhere with a good cancelation policy, but having trouble finding a booking for just one night. I'll keep looking though. Sure am glad you 'persuaded' me to book for the Columbus day weekend.

This is the height of the " leafpeeping " season and most motels/hotels require a minimum two night stay for Friday or Saturday arrivals.

I've booked the White Mt Hotel & Resort for my two nights. We figure we can do lots of little drives and site seeing from there. If the guy I spoke to on the phone is anything to go by, its will be a lovely place to stay.

You can easily get to the Lake Winnipesaukee area from there. Don't miss Center Sandwich, a beautiful tiny town, and the Squam Lakes area. Twice we have seen a black bear near the road. Wolfboro is a charming town on Lake W.
You are going to have a great time! There will be a lot of traffic in Center Sandwich for the Sandwich agricultural fair but it won't be anything like big city traffic. It's very small.

Thanks, after looking at our maps we realized we are better off having our lodging sorted and just do some lovely drives from those bases. So this part of our trip is pretty well sorted......

5 nights NYC, train to Boston (Sheraton won on Priceline) for one night.
Pick up hire car, one night booked in Wells (Holiday Guest House).
Next day head to North Conway, two nights booked (White Mt Hotel) .
Then its off to Stowe for the Columbus Day Long weekend (Green Mt Inn).
Back to Boston drop the car and another one night stay (still to find a hotel), before catching train back to NYC for one night.
(Tickets in hand for A Steady Rain this night ) then catch our flight to LAX to begin our month long West Coast adventure.

Phew, hows all that sound?

I think you will enjoy the trip much more with reservations set. It really is hard to find lodging in northern New england during foliage season

you might want to consider staying in Cmbridge your last night in the Boston area
