Weekend trip wine-tasting on Long Island
I want to plan a day trip wine-tasting with a group of friends. I know New York wines are not Napa wines but I'd love a place with decent wine and outdoor seating. Any suggestions? What are your favorite vineyards on Long Island?

The majority of wineries on the North Fork of Long Island have outdoor tasting areas, including those listed below.
Here are my favorites traveling west to east: Jamesport Vineyards (Jamesport) Shinn Winery (Mattituck) McCall Wines (Cutchogue) Corey Creek (Southold) One Woman Wines (Southold) Old Field (Southold) I would choose three and break up the day with lunch. Wednesday's Table, Southold Fish Market, and Erik's are all good places for lunch. |
That's super helpful northfork. I've actually been to Jamesport and loved it. It was a bit busy when I went and I am worried about finding seating for ~12 people but it's a great place.
One Woman Wines looks really nice online! Do you think it would be ok with a group? |
Is the wine at Channing Daughters as good as the pictures suggest? (obviously wine is totally by preference) But i'm sucker for great photos and videos.
Thank you for the suggestions! |
One Woman would work with a group. They have plenty of picnic tables outside. As for Jamesport, I would call ahead and let them know that you're coming with a group. Just check the websites of each winery before you go to make sure that they don't have rules against arriving with large groups. Many wineries have bans on limos/buses and others simply don't allow large groups even if you're arriving in separate cars.
I haven't been to Channing Daughters, but it's on the South Fork so might not be manageable if you're visiting North Fork wineries that same day. |
Osprey's Dominion is very friendly for groups and families. There is a large lawn with picnic tables, an outdoor patio with tables, indoor tables, a big tasting bar, weekend live music, and the wine is quite good. Mrs. Peabody and I often stop there with a picnic lunch and some pastries, taste a flight, buy a bottle of riesling or carignan or pinot noir (they open for you and provide glasses), and relax for a few hours. There are families with kids playing, often groups of what look like pre-wedding girls' outings, dogs catching frisbees, humans playing some provided lawn games, etc. Last summer there even was an oyster bar set up in the middle of the back lawn.
