Weekend trip for dad with 14 y/o son
Mom and sis are on the road.
Sonny Boy and I have a weekend trip anywhere in continental US from Northern Va. No place is out of the question. Where to go to have a blast? City fun preferred but would consider boondox too. |
When?

And what would be "a blast"?
|
Depends what your son is interested in. If my son, 13, could go anywhere and do anything with his dad for the weekend in the US, he'd pick the San Francisco area. He would want to play golf at Pebble Beach and see Alcatraz.
|
What's to worry about? My dad and I went from Chicago to LA by train 55 years ago, when I was 17. Just being with my dad, just the two of us, was one of the highlights of my life. That was a real blast for me.

I'd pick a city like NY, Chicago, Seattle, or San Francisco, whichever had a baseball game you son might want to see. A place like Dallas, with both a baseball team and nearby Six Flags would have made my son at that age think he'd died and gone to heaven.
|
If it is this weekend, go to Louisville for Thunder Over Louisville, an air show and possibly the largest fireworks show in North America.

Hop on amtrack and come to NYC for the weekend. Always lots to see and do, so you will be as busy as you want to be.
The Bronx Zoo has some new exhibits and there's always new babies to see there. The Central Park Zoo was redone a few years ago and is fun as well. The Intrepid Air and Space Museum on the Hudson River is a BIG draw these days, especially since the addition of the SR71 (Blackbird) spy plane and the Concorde. Have a GREAT TIME!!!!!! |
I took my 17 year old nephew to NYC and he loved it. There is plenty to see: Statute of Liberty, Ground Zero, Empire State Building, Central Park, Time Square, Chinatown, Little Italy, Lower East Side, Metropolitam Musem of Art, etc.
His favorite food was pizza at Ray's Pizza. |
How about a longer distance overnight bicycle trip? Maybe along the C&O Canal?
|
NYC with a Yankees game, a theatre show, people watch, Statue of Liberty, etc.
Rafting down a river in Virginia, etc. Snorkelling in the Keys Boston Red Sox, Whale Watching, Blue Man Group Performance, Freedom Trail, etc. |
Thanks to all who responded. Weekend of May 7.
He picked San Francisco - Nationals away game at SBC park, plus Sony Metreon and Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory. Burritos, Hunan Chinese food, and antacid for dad. Overnight flight to return Monday will leave us in rough shape but that is what a road trip is all about, I suppose. |
Awesome! He may like Alcatraz as well if you can fit it in. It would be wise to get the tickets NOW online. Good luck!
|
If this was my house, also in N. VA., son and father would stay home and enjoy the peace and quiet and Nationals games while my daughter and I were gone, and they'd go away to San Fransisco some weekend when we were home!
|
SF and baseball sounds great! I agree about alcatraz, and yes, get tickets now though as they sell out and you most likely would not be able to buy them once you arrive.
