weekend in Providence suggestions please

Our family will be heading up to Providence in early august to do some college visits. We will have one day to walk around Providence, can you recommend something places to visit and cool places to eat. I will have an 11 year old with me with lots of energy. We will definitely stay for the waterfire evening. I have the schedule.

Are you visiting Brown? If you are, you might want to walk around on Thayer Street - little shops, cafes, etc.

Do you have a budget for dining?
See link below for restaurants, attractions, etc.

We love Al Forno - it is pricey, but just wonderful - no reservations.

My son is a Brown Student and working there for the summer. We LOVE the school. I will ask him about 'cool' places for lunch, etc.

You may also want to walk around or eat in Federal Hill (little Italy).

RISD has a wonderful art museum, if your family is interested in that kind of thing.

We would much appreciate an update to this thread, as we will be in a few days and would love to get to know the town? Where's the best walk? What are the cool neighborhoods? Where not to go? Outside of RISD, what are the museums?

I think the best walks are the 5 blocks or so between Thayer St and Benefit St. That's where all the big, old houses are very nice walking area. Check out Prospect Park for great views of the city.

Atwells Ave or Federal Hill is also nice but don't stray too far from the main strip, but great restaurants.

Waterfire is a nice event for walking and seeing a bit of the city at night.

Wickenden St has some cute cafes, good ethnic restaurants (Indian, Japanese, Italian) and a few little galleries where they often have exhibits. I prefer it to Thayer St which has become very commercialized although if Brown's your school chances are a lot of time will be spent on/around Thayer.

My daughter (7) likes the Irish restaurant downtown RiRa, they have live music sometimes...
Hope this helps have a nice trip!
