Weekend in Milwaukee
 

Flying in to Milwaukee Sat. Sept.18 and wondering if there are any special events happening that weekend. I found a comedy show called Capital Steps and might book that for Saturday night but wondering if there are any special activities going on during the day Saturday or Sunday. We will be staying at the Hyatt downtown.

On the left margin is entertainment. You might find something there. I live here and am not familiar with Capital Steps. There's lots of night life near the Hyatt. Go right (east) as you leave the Hyatt about two blocks. Cross the river and the next street is Water Street or about four more blocks is Jefferson St. Either is where the action is. One of our favorites is Elsa's on the Park. It's on Jefferson St. Great drinks and casual food.
Weather looks good for next weekend. It's been atrocious all summer but has been great lately. Hope you enjoy your stay in Milwaukee!

I did a little more research and found that Capitol Steps is a show at the Pabst Theater. I don't know anything about the show but it's playing at the Pabst. That's also only about two blocks east from the Hyatt. It's a beautifully restored theater. Checkout Ticketmaster for Sept 18.

Capitol Steps is political satire. My mom has a CD of it (I believe it started on nat'l public radio). If you like that type of thing, it's really pretty funny. And the Pabst is beautiful.

Thanks, peejay and SaraLou, I ordered tickets for Capital Steps over the phone today. I heard the Pabst Theatre is beautiful. During the day, if the weather is good, maybe we'll check out the riverwalk. If not, there's always shopping. I called the Hyatt and they said there's a shopping mall close by. We'll be driving up to Menasha on Sunday so maybe we'll leave Milwaukee early and check out Fond du Lac and/or Oshkosh on the way up.

Capitol Steps is a very talented, very entertaining troupe. Political satire that cuts all ways. Hope you enjoy! There've been some other recent threads here on Milwaukee - you might want to check out for restaurant recommendations, including Coquette Cafe, nice, good and reasonably priced Bistro. There's an interesting art museum in OshKosh in a wonderful old mansion, but aside from that, I'd suggest you spend your time getting to know Milwaukee, a neat little city.

Thanks, arjay, will do a search on previous posts. We've never been to Milwaukee before so we're looking forward to exploring. Don't have much time as I have to be in Menasha for a course on Monday.

If you're looking for shopping, go west to Mayfair Mall on 108th (HWY 100) and North Avenue. It's about 15 minutes west of the Hyatt. The downtown shopping at the Grand Avenue is just ok.
Sorry you just missed the end of the Lakefront festival season. Indian Summer just wrapped up. You might enjoy the beautiful new Calatrava art museum. At least take a trip east down Wisconsin Avenue and have a look at it. Ask the concierge at the Hyatt what time the "wings" will be opening and closing.

Bonn: We'll definitely try the Mayfair Mall. My experience is that downtown malls are usually more expensive. What are these "wings" that will be opening and closing? Too bad we missed the festival season and we're too early for Oktoberfest. We made it to Taste of Chicago this summer and it was fabulous!

The Calatrava designed addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum has a brise soleil that opens and closes. It opens when the museum opens (10AM) and closes when the museum closes (5 PM most days) and opens and closes at noon just for fun.

That museum is gorgeous. Right on the lake--it looks like it's about ready to set out to sea. It's a work of art in its own right.

Wow, I just checked the website provided by Bonn and that museum building is incredible! I'll be sure to drop by and have a look. I see they have a cafe on site. Anyone know what the food is like? Maybe we'll stop there for lunch on Saturday.
Bonn, I saw another posting that mentioned a lot of Wisconsin restaurants have prime rib specials on Saturday. My husband loves a good prime rib so I thought we might try that Saturday night. Any recommendations?

The cafe at the museum has some nice, fresh items. You don't have to pay museum admission to see the Calatrava addition and eat in the cafe, if you're not into art.

I can't speak for prime rib, but Coerper's is very popular for steaks.

There's a terrific Irish Pub (part of a B&B) on the eastside of town, just north of downtown..called County Clare. If you like "things Irish," they have live music on Sunday nites.

Also...Wis Pub Radio (wpr.org) had an interview this afternoon with one of the founders/producer/writers from the Capital Steps. It was terrific - made me wish I could see this w/e's show. They played a number of excerpts..check out the website for a preview of your upcoming entertainment!

I'm not much help on the Prime Rib either, as we never order it. But a downtown idea would be Mo's--A Place for Steaks on 3rd and Wisconsin, a few blocks from the Hyatt.

Thanks all for the recs. I'm sure we'll find a good place to eat. Sounds like there's quite a few. I'm really glad we got tickets to Capital Steps. We got tickets in row A (which they told us is not the front row but a few rows from the front). Sounds like a lot of fun. I'll post a mini report when I get back.
