Weekend in Atlanta
I'll be in Atlanta this Saturday/Sunday with a teenager. Have a college visit planned for Monday. Any suggestions on what to do the two days? He's definitely not into shopping! thanks -

He might find the CNN tour interesting. You should reserve in advance: www.cnn.com/studiotour.

a godspell service at the church where Dr martin Luther King was the priest is
a unforgettable "experience" : we were there 2 weeks ago during a medical congress and it has been the "moment" of our stay...Musically it's perfect but moreof that there is a sense of "wellcoming" which gives you some frissons... CNN is not bad and unfortunately, the Braves are out of playoff... Erik |
I suggest that you visit the Martin Luther King Center and the Atlanta History Center.
When I came to Atlanta for a college visit some years ago, I most appreciated a friend who drove me around town so I could see the different areas and neighborhoods. Rather than being a tourist, he showed me what it would be like to live here. What college are you visiting? I (and hoepfully others) may be able to make more specific suggestions. |
Not sure what his interests are but you could go to the Zoo. I know Little Five Points is putting on a Halloween Parade that Saturday and having coffin races etc. However, please note that Little Five Points is not a suburban area and caters to a varied group of people from goth to alternative. Still, I am considering going to have a margarita and some laughs.
There is the Atlanta History Center, Woodruff Arts Center, Piedmont Park etc. Try logging onto www.ajc.com and get the happenings for the weekend or post his interests and maybe that could help me out better. |
I don't know if he is interested in art but during my stay they were announcing a fantastic exposition at the High museum : highlights from the Kroller Muller museum : it's a neerlandaise museum south of amsterdam with one of the nicest collection of van Gogh/impressionism/but also modern painters I've ever seen.
I think there would be some tickets in advance to buy if you like art... Erik. |
If he is looking at Tech for school then the Varsity for a dog & fried peach pie is a must! It has been a Tech tradition forever. You might also check with someone in the admissions office before your trip. They are sure to have advice because they want your son to like the area.
My teenage nieces enjoyed the Cocoa-Cola museum but it depends on what he's into. If you can give us some hints then we might have better suggestions. Having a car also gives you more options for places outside the city - Stone Mountain, etc. |
yes, we're looking at Tech. Staying near the campus and we will have a car. I spent a lot of time in Atlanta a very long time ago and most of that was in Dunwoody and Chamblee. The CNN thing sounds good as does a trip to Stone Mountain. thanks - let's hope the weather cooperates!
