weekend getaway 4 hours (driving) from Philadelphia
 

Hi,<BR>My Fiance and I want to go on a long weekend getaway over the 4th of July! Can anyone give me suggestions that are inexpensive-we are planning a wedding! Looking for something up to 4 hours (driving) from Phila area. We arent looking for a shore point unless it is up north (Martha's Vineyard). We are also not looking for a city. Last year we stayed on a plantation in Virginia. That was great! Something w/ a resort feel (maybe an all inclusive). <BR><BR>Anyone ever been to the Homestead Resort in West Virginia (I think)? Looks so romantic! <BR><BR>I would highly appreciate it if you could give us some suggestions! <BR>Thank you

Check out Berkeley Springs WV. http://www.berkeleysprings.com/ Five spas in the area. I understand the Homestead is quite nice, but I doubt it's particularly inexpensive.

Hi <BR>The Homestead and Greenbrier are quite pricey and beautiful. If you would like most of the amenities offered at these place check out Coolfont - I'm not certain of the golf course but there should be courses nearby and their spa treatments are marvelous, their meals are quite good, and their rooms are comfortable and the cost was about 1/3 the Homestead.<BR><BR>You might also try eastern shore Maryland around St Michaels and Oxford. They're both great little places with lots of neat B &amp; B's. Some can get fairly high though.

I'm sorry - I forgot to say that Coolfont is near Berkley WV. The area is just beautiful around there.

Ohiopyle State Park...tons of things to see/do and relax!<BR><BR>Nice cool mountainy kind of area!<BR><BR>Charlottesville VA is nice but it might be too far. UVA is a pretty campus and you have Boar's Head Inn nearby. You can visit Monticello and area winerie.<BR><BR>I will actually be in Philly for the long weekend! My first trip....happens to coincide with a Pearl Jam concert.<BR><BR>

I know you said no cities. But i would really recommend Pittsburgh. It has the reputation of an old coal mining town. However it is really nice now. Their are TONS of things to do. But the main reason i say this is because you are going to be there on the 4th of july. The Pittsburgh fireworks display is AMAZING. One of the best i've seen. You can take a dinner cruise and watch them from the water (they fire them over the rivers and the city).

in Pittsburgh you can go up to mount washington and take the trams. I would also recommend the strip district for great food. It is a road in downtown that is like a huge international food market. greek and italian are the dominant cuisines there, but polish and germain are also found. their are great hotels, one of which, sits right on top of mount washington and gives you a commanding view of the *point*.

how about Newport, Rhode Island.
The Adele Turner Inn is a very romantic B&amp;B there.

Berkely Springs is a good idea, we stayed at Coolfont and loved it.

Another place to think of is the Finger Lakes in NY? It's just about 4 hours, maybe a little longer to that area. Besides being a beautiful area, there are many nice wineries to tour (and most of them are free!)

RE: Pittsburgh. First of all, Pittsburgh's reputation was that of a STEEL town-- it was the &quot;Iron City&quot;, after all. And it's nice enough-- I should know, I had to live there growing up, and it's even nicer now. But this is not where you go to have a nice romantic long weekend, to plan a wedding. Especially when you're coming from Philadelphia (big city, much more to do). Newport RI sounds like a much nicer idea. Or even New Hope in Bucks County...!
