weekend close to Baltimore

we are planning a weekend in November with 3 kids-8,7,4. We live in Baltimore, but are new to the area-any ideas.

Philadelphia, Washington DC, NYC? Really depends on if you want city or something away from the city?

Annapolis, Eastern Shore, Northern VA...what are you interested in?

Assateague National Seashore (for the ponies) and Ocean City boardwalk fun ?

Second vote for Philly: Liberty Bell; Liberty Hall; great food; Science museum (not correct name)

Annapolis: Boat ride; tour of Naval Academy (awesome); shopping; pretty houses; pretty boats; great food

Chincoteague: Wild horses and birds (wonderful); cute shops. Many things close after Thanksgiving so call ahead. We were there for Thanksgiving weekend-more crowded than we expected. Reservations for dinners needed.

Baltimore: Stay in the Inner Harbor. Ride the Duck (awesome land/sea tour on land/sea vehicle)! Visionary museum; science center; concerts/shows

Second also for DC: Smithsonians (new butterfly exhibit) alone would keep you busy allllll weekend!

Old Towne Alexandria: Go to Mt Vernon; eat in old towne at olde taverns; Torpedo factory with lots of art (some kids would find interesting perhaps)

Please report back!

How about the Amish country?

TDudette Nov 3rd, 2008 01:17 PM

Amish is good choice also.

Am just re-reading and I think Assateague and Chincoteague are two sides of the same coin so to speak. Double check map to confirm but I think you get to the first by going toward Ocean City Md and the second by going south through Salisbury on Rte. 13?

thanks for the replies. We don't want to go to big cities. Isn't it too cold to go to shore or to see the wild horses?

Hi ita, You never know what you'll get in November, eh? We were there for a Thanksgiving getaway and drove and took pictures from the car but walked around the town of Chincoteague with just jackets. Haven't been to the Assateague side. Do check with the rangers about your options!

You still haven't told us what you like to do, or your kids. Which weekend are you going?

ita Nov 5th, 2008 06:06 PM

when you are travelling with kids (I am the grandmother) what you do is what interests kids and hopefully you as well. We are interested in exploring little towns, maybe historical. I am really interested in the wild horses and Ocean City, but my daughter-in-law thinks it is too cold-the weekend is the one before Thanksgiving.

Check these websites for events that weekend:

The towns of Easton, St. Michaels, and Oxford, on the Eastern Shore are enjoyed by many tourists, young and old alike.

Hi ita!

Annapolis has lots of cute shops, fun places to eat, and history to explore-a fun afternoon for all ages!

:)

I think we have made a decision-Williamsburg, staying at the Great Wolf Lodge with the waterpark. It is fairly expensive but sounds great. Has anyone been there? Does it sound like a good pla?

LT Nov 8th, 2008 08:17 PM

. . . I was just going to suggest this. I haven't been to Great Wolf, but it's an area that is great for families. I think your grandchildren would probably be far more interested in a waterpark than in a "quaint little town."
