Weekend Activities in Kauai
Is it possible to rent a kayak on a Sunday to go down the Wailua River? Are the beaches more crowded typically on the weekends, making it harder to snorkel? I am trying to work on my itinerary and welcome any advice!

Reserve the kayak in advance and you'll have no problems -- but the river is also home to water-skiers, so stay out of their well-marked area. And you'll be launching at the makai (ocean) end of the river -- so you'll actually be paddling _up_. Time your trek with the tides...makes it much, much easier. We like to paddle _up_ at slack tide (just as high tide is waning), then just drift back down the river as the tide is going out. Lazy kayaking, for sure! 8-)
Sunday is time for `ohana (family) throughout the islands...especially true at the beaches and parks here on Kaua`i. If you must snorkel on a Sunday, go _early_. That's also when the waters are at their most clear condition, so it's a generally good idea anyway. :-) |

This sounds like a great idea to me...Although I have no idea when the tides wane or going out. How do I find this out? Also, since there are five people in our party, I am thinking we can't have three kayaks fit on our car roof. Is there a company we can rent from that are located right there at the beginning of the river? |
When you make your reservation, tell them you want to time your trip to all you to drift down with the outgoing tide -- the better kayak companies have the annual tide books and can handle that for you.
Many of the kayak companies will deliver the kayaks for you -- or rent from Smith's Boats/Kayaks since you want to do the Wailua River (they're located right there on the riverbank). |
For snorkeling definately go to Kee beach but get there early as it gets crowded. Also check out Wailua Falls,Queens Bath,Spouting Horn,Waimea canyon,Secrets Beach.Kauai is a beautiful place..have fun!!! :)
