Week travelling in Arizona
 

We are two families from the UK flying into Phoenix in August - our choice because we could fly there free with air miles. We are immediately heading to San Diego to spend a week with friends then have a week to travel. Your suggestions for places to visit in Arizona would be very welcome - there is a chance we could get a time share place in Sedona for the week - would that be a good idea and can you do day trips to the GC from there. We have to get back to Phoenix to fly home. Have read that Phoenix will be very hot and cooler up around Flagstaff and Sedona - is this correct? Thanks in anticipation of any replies.

Yes, Phoenix is very hot - 100 degrees F every day for a high, at least 85F for a low. Sedona is about 10 degress cooler, Flagstaff 20 less. Sedona is a good base for northern Az trips (flagstaff is better)

Even though Phoenix is hot, that doesn't mean that you wouldn't enjoy baking in the sun for a couple of days (I have met people from England that came for a week to do just that!)

We stayed in a condo at Sunterra Summit and had a nice visit. The property is nice and they have cultural / educational / social activities on site most evenings. We really enjoyed those. You also get reciprocity to enjoy the Hilton Spa's amenities. It is on the less developed edge of Sedona so you are away from all that hubbub.

Hi from Cumbria UK - Just researching our upcoming Wyoming trip for this July, when I saw your post. We spent 3 weeks touring Arizona 18 month ago. We flew to Tucson and stayed a week on a dude ranch, then toured AZ. The weather was 107 in June in Tucson, and about 80 in Flagstaff. It is a dry heat,not the wet heat we are used to, so doesn't feel quite as unbearable as you might expect. We had a fantastic holiday, but the particular highlights for us were a visit to atmospheric and haunting Tombstone, a few days in Sedona pottering around the rocks and New Age stuff, plus an adventure horse ride with river crossings.We then moved to nearby Cottonwood for a few days, from where we took a fantastic train ride on the Verde Valley Railroad. Definately a special day, with strolling guitar players in the coaches etc., and open viewing cars. We took in a great Rodeo at Flagstaff. The GC is ok for a day trip from Sedona, but do consider taking the Grand Canyon Railroad from either Williams or Flagstaff, even if you have to stay overnight to make it possible. It is a trip you will probably never forget. I'm sure you will enjoy your time in Az anyway. We passed through 3 years ago on a much larger itinerary, and liked AZ so much we had to dedicate 3 weeks to it this time. Regards - Jack & Janice
