Web sites to help w/ airline seat selection
Hello: I am trying to help my brother w/ his honeymoon plans. He does not like to fly but is doing so as a gift to his bride. In lieu of this I am trying to find him the best seats that I can on his flights. He is a tall guy who would appreciate as much leg room as possible ( who wouldn't right). He also is prone to motion sickness. Anyway, I thought I'd heard of a site or two that critiques the seat location in various plane types. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it matters, we're thinking he'll be flying United (Airbus A320-100/200 and Boeing 757-200).

Exit rows are the best bet for tall guys (I'm married to one), but typpicaly only the airlines frequent flyer status members can book them in advance and the rest of the public has to try to request them at the airport at checkin..... |

United has "Economy +" seats in the front of their coach cabin with 2-3" extra legroom. However, you can only get those seats pre-assigned if you have Elite/Premiere status with United (i.e. fly a lot, which I am sure your brother doesn't), or buy a high-category fare. So are other exit row/bulkhead seats with more legroom. The best thing they can do is to use online check-in as early as possible. I believe it's 24 hours prior to departure on UA. At that time, all seats - including Economy + ones - will be available. Change the seat then. Or ask again at the gate. |
United now allows "upgrades" from regular Economy to to Economy plus on some of its flights for a small fee at the time of check-in. I believe the fee runs around $25-$50, but it seems to vary from flight to flight, and this option isn't always offered. Your brother should be sure to ask about it regardless. Sometimes a sympathetic Gate Agent will allow a very tall person to sit in E+ even without the "upgrade" fee. If the flights can be scheduled at less busy times (midday on a Tuesday or Wednesday, for example) they should also have better luck with seating, since the plane is less likely to be full.
