Weather in Portland

We were thinking of going to Portland in April. Would it be Spring there in the middle of April or would it still be cold?

This would be Portland, OR. (I did a search on Oregon posts, and this one appeared there.)

The average highs are in the low 60s, the average lows are in the low 40s. Still pretty chilly. The record highs for mid-April are in the upper 70s to low 80s, so depending on the year it can be positively balmy.

(Assuming she means Oregon)

No one can predict the weather months ahead of time of course. Yesterday in Portland it was mid-50's and sunny - in January...

Define "cold". To someone living in Minneapolis April would *not* be cold. Portland in April is likely to be warmER than January, but it is also still likely to be raining (August and September are statistically the most dry months in Portland). And the International Rose Test Garden won't be in bloom yet...

Dig up an alamanac site (weather.com ?) to see the average temperatures and rainfall in Portland in April.

I'm going to be in Portland in April, too - never been, free flight, everybody seems to love the city. Had planned to do a lot of biking but am beginning to think that it might be too cold and rainy. How do Portlanders (Portlandites?) spend those rainy days? I've got a list of coffee shops and brew pubs, then there's the art museum and Powell's. Any other suggestions?

Pam: Thanks for the restaurant recommendations. Found Bluehour on Zagat . It looks great. No listing for Spice Box, however. Could you mean Saucebox? That looks good, too.

Enjoy Portland. It's a great city. I remember 20+ years ago it was real dump, but since then it's been totally transformed and is now (I think) one of the nicer cities in the US. It's especially great for pedestrians.

If you have time, you might consider checking out the WONDERFUL oriental garden near the zoo. It's quite large, and absolutely stunning (my favority oriental garden ANYWHERE)- and that time of year it should be particularly nice.

Let me echo Ken's words about Portland's Japanese Gardens! The NY Times says:

"If Seattle's garden is the botanical equivalent of a Michelin two-star restaurant, Portland's is a three-star masterpiece, the most scrupulously maintained and richly cultivated Japanese garden anywhere in this country. Many aficionados consider Portland's the most beautiful Japanese garden outside Japan."

Don't miss it if you can help it!

I stayed in Bielsko Biala and it was cold and damp. Warsaw would probably be similar.

Weather: Portland OR has experienced a warmer then usual winter, it would be hard to predict in April. But regardless of the rain, its a wonderful city to visit, with plenty to do, just back a small umbrella or wear a jacket with a hood. My experience is spring is that it never rains that hard, just enough for a hood or hat.

There are so many great restaurants in Portland, plus lots of micro brews.

Papa Hayden's is my all time favorite Portland restaurant. Great salads, even better desserts. There are two locations, one is on NW 23rd Street.

The Portland Art Museum is excellent, located on the city block parks, nice to walk around.

There are several theatres that may be worth investigating.

Visit the Japanese garden is incredible, not to be missed, close to the rose garden.

Some people like Pittock Mansion, I've toured large homes in Newport RI and Long Island and did not think too much of it. It was the former home of the founder of the Oregonian Newspaper.

Multnomah Falls and Columbia Gorge is fab. Visit Bridal Veil Falls, amazing! Take the sternwheeler boat cruise up and down the river is enjoyable.

Mt. Hood and Timberline Lodge

Take a day trip to the coast, visit some of the vineyards. Oregon is know for their Pinot Noir. Close to the coast is Tilamock County, visit the cheese and ice cream factory.

End of the Oregon Trail Museum is fun.

We also did a day trip to Mount St Helens, great visitor center, very interesting to see.

April is definately spring but that doesn't mean tons warmer. Probably more than cold it would be wet. A hood would probably suffice for most of the wet.

I agree with the Japanese Garden and at that time it would probably be lovely with azaleas blooming.

As for bike riding, it was a drizzly day and I was hiking and was passed by several bikers with mud up their backs. Just bring extra clothes to change into - rain doesn't stop us here.
