WEATHER IN PALM SPRINGS NEXT WEEK

We are coming to Palm Springs this Wednesday through Saturday - coming from cold Wisconsin. I just looked up the weather and it says 98 to 102! Of course, that's why golf is cheaper in the afternoon, I'm sure. But, dumb question here......how bad is 98 to 102, really? We're talking different humidity, unlike it get here, I read. I grew up in Virginia, with humidity, but I'm older now (53) :)

Is it really god awful to golf in the afternoon, unbearably so, or is it just hot?
We're staying at Embassy Suties, La Quinta and want to golf one of the PGA courses, PGA West, La Quinta Mountain, Indian Wells, then a couple of regulars!

Leaving Wednesday morning; can't wait!

A couple of good places to eat, perhaps local, (not $$$$), but not necessarily cheap either. And we're not big Mexican dish eaters, etiher.....would really be appreciated.

98-102 is hot, not matter how you slice it. It's not so bad if you can stay out of the direct sun, but in the sun, it's HOT!

we're laughing, wondering if we are gonna die! So, we'll be twilight golfing if we get there, hit the street and melt! Either that, or use "air conditioned" golf carts. KIDDING!

Twilight golf is actually great in Palm Springs. Early morning and early evening are the nicest times of day.

thanks! was looking at golf now for tee tines. they have some early morning and twilight.

Early morning is better you'll be done before the worst heat and can go nap and lay by the pool.

cyndiwisc May 20th, 2011 07:37 PM

I could definitely deal with that. hubby likes to nap. thanks guys!

It will be hot -- no question. But it honestly won't feel like 98-100 does in VA or in the midwest.

It is sort of a joke --but is true --it is a 'dry' heat. 100F in PS will feel much more comfortable than 85F in VA/DC/NC. You won't want to be out in it more than necessary -- but you won't die like 95F w/ 90% humidity. More like 12%-20% and that makes a HUGE difference.

janisj is right, however, I find that the big difference in "dry" heat vs. "humid" is that in a dry heat place like Palm Springs, if you get out of the direct sun, you can be relatively comfortable, whereas in a humid place, you can't escape the heat.

I was using the "dry heat" theory, too, but Tom was freaking a little bit! I figure we'll be fine. We'll either go in the morning or twilight. We are going to take the tram ride up the mountain, want to go to Thursday's street faire, get a couple of good dinners, and do some golfing. We might go to a casino in the heat of the afternoon. I heard Jake's was good, but another site gave bad reviews. Any hints?

Hint: Bring your umbrella from Wisconsin, and use it as a sun shield. People will not look at you funny. More likely, if they comment at all, they will say something like "Why didn't I think of that?".

cyndiwisc May 21st, 2011 06:50 AM

Thanks for that suggestion, db. Much appreciated!

Two other tips: stay out of the traps, they're about 10 degrees hotter than the grass. Don't linger on the greens, they are hotter than the rough. Also be sure to start drinking extra water when you arrive, it can take a few days to really adjust to the dryness. You won't realize you're sweating.

You might check the TV network website, www.kesq.com
It tends to have more accurate forecasts. When I see overnight lows in the 60s and 70s, that means morning golf will be fine. Later on in the summer it can get humid and start out in the 90s, which means no going outside for the day!

I will check out that web site. You guys are great; thanks.

You'll be fine! Plan outdoor activities early in the day and lounge by the pool in the afternoon. With water constantly evaporating from your skin you should be comfortable.

The nights are phenomenal this time of year.
