Weather in New York

So I leave for NY next week!!! I live in Seattle and the weather here is beautiful right now. I have been keeping track of the weather in NY and I see isolated thunderstorms. DOes that mean rain all day or just sporadic rain throughout the day? The temperature is hot so it confuses me. Can someone please let me know what I should be packing for clothing? Thanks!

Check a 10-15 day forecast on Weather.com or Accuweather.com for finalizing your packing.

For the first day, or first few days, you can see predictions for hourly temps.

Isolated thunderstorms typically do not last long and there may not be any.

Be sure to pay attention to the "low's". It can be very chilly at night, even if very hot during the day.

And, be sure to take a sweater everywhere you go. Theaters, restaurants, shops, are often overcooled.

Today the temp was 84 and right now it's 64 so it can vary widely during the summer, or it can be very HOT with high humidity, and quite honestly your guess will be as good as ours.

Bring warm weather clothing and a trick I do is keep a pashmina (shawl)in my purse, so if it gets chilly in a theatre or restaurant, I can be comfortable. All along Canal St you can find pashimas in every colour and pattern you can think of for around $5.00.

Carry a small umbrella with you even when there is no forecast for rain. When it gets hot there can be a thunderstorm at any time. It usually comes in bursts though. I wish I had an umbrella with me last night.

Scattered thunderstorms does not mean continuous rain. If it happens it will fairly brief ( 5 minutes ---45 minutes }, usually towards the late afternoon.

If it occurs just go into the nearest shop, bar restaurant, museum etc

Enjoy your trip.

The weather today is absolutely beautiful. It was around 70 when I left my apartment with no humidity. I find that the forecasts are generally lousy, as in, sometimes what's happening outside my window doesn't even match up! You can usually get a good sense 2-3 days before, but I think any further out is kind of useless. In general, it's quite hot (80-90) and very humid. Unless the forecast calls for a strong chance of storms, I wouldn't schlepp an umbrella around all day. You can pop into a drugstore or buy one of the street for $3-$5 in case you need one.

July in New York will be hot and probably humid. Mid 80s is an average high - but it's supposed to get hot again next week - mid 90s and humid. When it rains in the summer and it's hot we typically get thunderstorms in the afternoon - these can be torrential downpours -but rarely last more than 30 minutes to an hour. (The best thing to do is go into a store or coffee shop - but sandals/flip flops can be an issue - filthy feet and ruined shoes.)

If it's cooler you may get all day - but much lighter - rain.

If it's very hot during the day it often doesn;t cool down at night, since all the buildings and sidewalks absorb the heat and reflect it back out at night. but in cooler - low 80s weather - it can get chilly at night out on the water.

For specifics for your day cehck out weather.com - but realize that for more than 3/4 days out they're not super accurate - no one can be.
