Weather in Dallas
I'm going to Dallas for the first time on a business trip this week, have checked the weather report (so I know what type of clothes to take) and it seems very hot (75-80F with some thunderstorms) Is this reasonably accurate?
|
Not sure what part of the country you are coming from, but for us Texans that isn't considered too hot. Temps sound accurate and don't forget some rain gear because there is always that possibility particularly in the DFW area.
|
I am in Dallas on business this week. The boomers hit this morning. It's about 75 out there right now, nice northerly breeze.More rain is forecast for Thursday with temps in the low 80's.My friends here are really looking forward to some fall temps.
|
Yes, that seems accurate; we Texans are happy to be out of the 90s.
|
Yesterday my kids were talking on the phone to my MIL who lives in Minnesota. They were telling her that it had really cooled off. Somehow, I don't think SHE would think that 89 was cool!
|
I'm coming over from the UK and our current temperatures are about 55F to 64F, so it's quite a change. I'm really looking forward to visiting.
|
Odin, Oh My! You are coming a long way.I have many friends in Texas.I am native Californian. My Texas friends always remind me: You can always tell a Texan.......But you cant tell him much!! :D
|
>Is that reasonably accurate?<
As one poster mentioend, it's very accurate. It is still quite warm here with some wet weather on the horizon so do bring an umbrella. Hope you enjoy your time here!!! And let us know if you have any more questions! Happy Travels! |
Thank you for your responses. I think I have most things sorted eg shopping malls (Grapevine Mills I've been told and Galleria have been suggested), most nights I'm being taken out for dinner by co-workers but I have couple free days over this weekend, maybe a restaurant suggestion? Something Texan, I understand Stockyards might be the area to go.
|
Hi Odin. Yes. I have heard Stockyards is a must and though I've lived here nearly four years, I have yet to experience it.
The Galleria and Grapevine are good mall choices as is NorthPark Center, depending on what part of town you're in. Not sure if it qualifies at "Texan" but one restaurant that is especially delish is Three Forks (3forksdotcom). It's just north of The Galleria. Hope that helps. And perhaps another Dallas Fodorite can pitch in with a Texas-specific restaurant or two. |
The State Fair ends this Sunday - the 21st. That's worth a visit...check out bigtex.com to see what's going on.
My faves this year have been: *the Human Cannonball *the Card Stacker (going for a World's Record!...breaking his own) *the Skyway ride *plus there's the petting zoo with a giraffe and a few other exotic animals *bird show is great if you've never seen it And of course that famous fried fair food!! |
Dear Odin,
It would help if we could know what part of Dallas you will be staying in, or if in fact you will be in Fort Worth, or somewhere in between (close to the airport) like Grapevine. A personal favorite with my gang of friends: For a very Texas breakfast, I'd recommend The Mecca in Dallas, which is a greasy spoon, hole-in-the-wall diner sort of place. The line on Saturday mornings is usually out the door. (Closed Sunday.) I'd definitely suggest getting a cinnamon roll, which normally fills a dinner plate. They have hearty breakfast fare and the whole place has a serious greasy, retro feel - in a good way. The neighborhood is industrial, but don't let that deter you! We often take out-of-town guests here. If you like spicy food, I'd suggest trying some Tex-Mex while you are in town. The folks who will be taking you out to dinner will likely have suggestions, as there are many great places in every neighborhood of Dallas/Fort Worth. I like Chuy's and Casa Navarro in Dallas, and Fuzzy's and El Paseo in Fort Worth, just to name a couple off the top of my head. Joe T Garcia's is very popular for Tex-Mex if you are in the Forth Worth area and is close to the Stockyards. This would be a good place to stop for margaritas and fajitas before heading out to the Stockyards. You already have your shopping down. With the currency conversion, you are going to go CRAZY with the bargains you will find. If you need shoes, try DFW Shoe Warehouse - one stop shopping for all kinds of shoes. They're all over the Metroplex (which is what we call the combined Dallas-Fort Worth area). Our French friends enjoyed a simple dinner at Texas Land & Cattle, which is a chain restaurant but has pretty good food with copious portions and there is likely to be one near your hotel. Like I said at the start, if you tell us where you are staying, those of us who know DFW can probably be of more help. Hope you have a great trip! |
If you go to the FW Stockyards, eat at the H3 Steakhouse. It's right at the corner of Main and Exchange. YUM!
|
If you are a tea lover, be sure to go to the Cultured Cup to check out their Mariage Frères tea. It is a must visit store for me each time I go to Dallas. It isn't a "Texas thing" but it is certainly fantastic tea!

Odin, I suggest the Allen Outlet mall for serious shopping. 1000x better than Grapevine Mills.
http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=5 Also, Sam Moon for jewelry, bags and accessories: http://www.sammoon.com/web3/ I'll be around Saturday, so if you want to run to any of these places let me know :) |
Agree...outlet shopping in Allen is a thousand times better than Grapevine Mills.
Btw - it might be DSW Shoe Warehouse. Not sure where you'll be staying, but the DSW in Preston Center is great and there's a Marshall's (kinda like outlet shopping) next to it. |
Thank you very much for all the great information!
I'm staying in Westlake, I may rent a car Sunday or rely on cabs-not sure yet. I love all these suggestions! |
The most memorable thing we did our first time in Dallas was go to the the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, 411 Elm Street, about the Kennedy assasination.
Best BBQ at Sonny Bryan’s 2202 Inwood Rd. near the museum. |
If you're in Westlake, you should shop at Southlake Town Square. Have Ice Cream at Milwaukee Joes. Not far from Westlake is the little town of Roanoke, famous for Babe's Chicken Dinner House.
|
Hmmmmm.....Sonny Bryan is at Inwood and Harry Hines and the museum is downtown..Thats about a 4.5 mile drive, not at all walkable, if thats what you mean by "near".Poor Odin might be wandering for days!!
