Weather for Christmas/New Years in Hawaii!
 

We are from the East Coast and have decided to celebrate Christmas in Hawaii with our three boys this year. Just looking to do something different. Lately, I have been hearing horror stories about how rainy Hawaii is during Christmas! Yikes! We'll be in Waikiki and Maui. Also, looking for fun things to do, too. Any feedback is appreciated.

I spent many years celebrating Christmas on the beach in Hawaii with nary a cloud in sight. (And brunch at the Tahitian Lanai in Waikiki - sadly now closed - sipping mimosas and eating eggs benedict). 18 years of Christmases, and not one rainy day. Still, it is almost winter, and considering how weather patterns have changed...you might get some rain. BUT... it will be Hawaiian rain, and you won't be on the East Coast freezing your whatsis off. You'll be sitting in Hawaii, waiting for the shower to end and the sun to come out.

Waikiki seems to have less rain than almost anywhere on Oahu. We lived in Makakilo for three years and it was often rainy at Christmastime. You should be fine in Waikiki.

well.....two years ago we spent the week between Christmas and New Years on Oahu. lots of sun. last year we spent that same week on Maui: no sun at all!!
however, just being on these islands is such a treat that it really, honestly didn't matter. there is so much to see and do regardless of the weather! i too am from the East Coast and would rather be in Hawaii in the winter than anywhere in the Northeast!

Last Christmas/News Years it rained for close to a week straight. There were some sun breaks but mostly clouds so we never saw the clear blue water. The waves were big on Maui which made snorkeling hard and the water cloudy. It was still very nice but I don't think I'll go in the winter again. You never know though, this year could be beautiful. We were on the Big Island in Kona where it never rains ( so everyone was telling us) but it rained. It also rained in Honolulu (flash flood warnings) and on Maui. We were told it was rare for it to rain quite so much though.

I was in Safeway around New years when I overheard a woman say she was going to sue her travel agent when she got home because the TA never said A WORD to her about rain. We still laugh over that one!

Chances are you will have great weather, but there are no gurantees--any time of year. A Pacific storm could blow in this week, you could have a hurricane; A Kona storm could hit us for New Years, or you be stuck in a blizzard next Christamas.

We spent Christmas on Oahu about five or six years ago and it was wonderful! We had only one day of rain.

The week before Christmas we were on the north shore which was quiet and so beautiful. The second week was in Waikiki which was much busier but still enjoyable (it is paradise, after all!).

Waikiki was crowded with Aloha Bowl fans ready to party. If that's not to your liking, you could plan to be in Maui then. You'll have a great time!

We spent Dec. 20-27 (this past Christmas) on Maui and had very nice weather but then we moved to Kauai and it poured continually (with some lightning and thunder, which I heard is rare). However, we all agreed that we liked Kauai better, despite the "bad" weather.

There is nothing more beautiful than a Hawaiian rain. I don't know why you would consider this a detriment to your vacation. It is wonderful warnm and something to experience when on a covered lanai with col libations and a couple of poke dishes that can be found in the local markets. Roll with the weather and enjoy it rather than fight it,
