British = caw-key
US = caa-key No, I pronounce it the same as you do! Perhaps the other pronounciation is proper "Queen's English" or something - but I say caa-key! No, we don't have a Labor (or Labour even) day here. We have a 'Bank Holiday' at the end of August (this year it was 30th August) - so I guess that could be classed as end of summer here. However, we don't 'shut down' after that! :) Reason I say that is because we found that some things in the US did shut down after Labor Day! Specifically, the shuttle to take us from the Village Store carpark (Yosemite) to the Visitor Center doesn't go after that date. We really wanted to go there - but, it's quite a walk from that car-park and you are only allowed to park there for 30 minutes! So, that wouldn't have given us much time actually AT the Visitor Center. What's more it was about 90 deg F and a glorious day - hardly the end of summer! (Though I've read that there was snow on high ground the week after we were there!) Only a very small gripe though - it was fabulous there, as was everywhere else we went! (Except we couldn't get to park at Red Rock Crossing, as it was full up - because it was Labor Day! :)) |
Patrick, in HS I so wanted to be a cute petite 5'2" rather than the 5'8" I am/was. Isn't it ironic that those of us who wished to be tiny finally achieve our goal when we are in our 80's and it really doesn't matter much anymore! The capri solution is clever!

And, at the same time as being logged into here - I'm also logged into my uni message board and (honestly!) we've been discussing acronyms to help us with our exams .......... Like, "Camels Ordinarily Sit Down Carefully, Perhaps Their Joints Creek" for the periods of the Phanerozoic eon (yep, am doing geology!). And I can't even remember my own name - lol! |
Gosh, Patrick and OO - I'm only 5'1" now - some of the crops come down to my ankles!! Shorts for me when I'm 80?! :)

My husband and I recently travelled to Egypt. We were constantly approached and asked if we were French or German. People seemed surprised when we said we were American. I asked around and was told that Americans always wear t-shirts, white sneakers, and either jeans or shorts. We wore sandals, light-weight button down shirts, and either light pants or for me, capris.
I didn't mean to sound critical of Diane in my post - but I probably did. It was just a light-hearted comparison. I dress very comfortably with no concern for rules except to make me happy. I usually look fine, even with the casual hair style and no make-up. Actually, that probably makes me look more European. |
