We loved HH, but want something different?
 

Which place would be the best for us? We loved Hilton Head, but want something different. We are 4 people in our 40's, with a small dog. We want a dog friendly place, with a town to stroll around in, good resteraunts, nice beaches, and outdoorsy stuff, like Hilton Head. We stayed at Sea Pines and loved that woodsy feel. Looking at: Kiahwah, Wild Dunes Isle of Palm. Any ideas?

Kiawah is popular. St. Augustine has the historic attraction in addition to your other features.
Charleston has the historic homes that you can visit from Kiawah.

A good bit further than your other suggestions is Sannibel/Captiva which is a southern Florida version of Hilton Head.

In the other direction is Destin in the panhandle with many of your preferred activities.

You will not get that woodsy feel on Isle of Palms. Just not that many trees. And be careful about where you would stay in Wild Dunes, some areas have serious beach erosion.

Having said that, we love HHI and also like Isle of Palms too. There are a few great restaurants on the island, dogs are allowed on the beach, and you're only 20 minutes to Charleston. There isn't much of a town to stroll around in on the island though.

Just a quick update- were were at Wild Dunes in July and they just finished their beach renourisment program. The beaches from the Grand Pavillion all the way down to Ocean Point were wide and clear. Plenty of room, and no visible erosion. Not only does it look great, but the sand they used for the renourishment program doesn't smell the way I've seen "renouishment" sand smell along the Outer Banks. This was very nice, and we go to IOP every year. We'll be back. Thanks.

Many places in the Keys are dog friendly. Key West has the small town, beaches, and great restaurants. For other travel ideas throughout the Florida Keys, check out:

Amelia Island beaches are dog friendly...

We love St. Simons Island, GA/Sea Island, and recommend it heartily.

We had been going to HH for years and wanted something different as well. This summer, we went to Duck, NC in the Outer Banks and loved it (with our dog!). The Outer Banks in general does not have a woodsy feel, but Duck is more treed and laid back - much less hustle & bustle than other towns in OBX, IMHO. We could walk easily to the beach & into town from the house we rented, which was great!
