In answer to your question, Tess--yes I have dined at Pacific Edge. My question was merely in the same vein as Alan's--since you are so critical of opinions about Carmel dining and lodging that differ from yours and are so emphatic in your opinions, I wanted to know why you had changed your opinion of Pacific Edge from previous a glowing recommendation. But apparantly passing up the opportunity to feel superior to others is not in your nature.

In defense of Tess, there is ***one*** poster on this thread who continues to recommend whatever restaurants she dined at, whatever hotel she stayed at, in whatever place, regardless of how long ago it was.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We are leaving tomorrow for four nights and will have to start dining as soon as we arrive as you have recommended so many terrific sounding spots, plus I have been reading about a few others as well.
A few questions though - Several suggestions re the Fish Wife in Pacific Grove -- We had heard that Passion Fish is quite good. Any comparisons??
We eat at a Roy's whenever we get a chance (I am assuming that this is Roy Yamaguchi's restaurant). We've NEVER been disappointed.
We are taking our walking shoes so that we don't come home weighing more than when we left. Isn't traveling yummy???

Do you mean a comparision between Passionfish and the Fishwife? If so, I like both but I strongly prefer Passionfish. To me, Fishwife is a funky, family friendly place, with good seafood--we often go there for lunch. Passionfish is one of my favorite Monterey Penninsula restaurants, more upscale than the Fishwife--wonderful, moderately priced food with a great wine list for retail prices.

We're back and want to thank all of you for your suggestions. We ate more in 5 days than we have in ages. Here are the spots were chose:
Breakfast - Katy's Place in Caramel - Outstanding!! The best! Sat outside and enjoyed the most wonderful benedict eggs - some 10 or so varities from which to select. Huge fresh fruit bowl. "The Cottage" another day was a total mistake - standard, lack-luster food and water-downed iced latte. Sunday, we enjoyed a nice breakfast at The Duck Club in the Monterey Plaza & Spa Hotel. We had a window table with a gorgeous view. You could select from a menu or a small buffet. The freshly squeezed orange juice was superb! Otherwise, the meal was unremarkable which really surprised us. Guess all of the hoop-la is over the dinners there.
Lunch - We enjoyed Bahama Billy's for some great fish tacos and fun tropical drinks. Bistro Giovanni in Carmel served up some yummy appetizers which we consumed for lunch with a great bottle of wine.
Dinner - Casanova was lovely to look at and the food was great, but we have NEVER seen such an out-of-sight, expensive wine list in all of our days. Except for approx. 6 HALF-bottle which started at about $35, everything else was in triple to quadruple digits. We couldn't believe it. I wish that we would have tried Bistro Giovanni for dinner, but came across it too late for this stay.
Our other dinners were in Pacific Grove - The Fishwife - good food with funky atmosphere. We have done it now, so no need to go back. HOWEVER, Passionfish was terrific!! So much so that we ate there two nights in a row. They fill up quickly so reservations are definitely recommended. Very innovative food, complex flavors nicely paired. We were always too full to enjoy the desserts, but they looked terrific as well. As for their wine list, which is quite extensive, we have never seen anything like this either. They only charge $5 over retail, then add another dollar to the cost which is donated to a sea turtle protection agency. Tod, the owner of Passionfish, served us our dinner course on our first visit, and was very happy to know that we had heard about his restaurant from you Fodorites. So, again, another thank you.
We hope to return next year around this same time. We left 90 degree weather in Northridge and we were looking forward to a cooler climate, especially since the Weather Channel had indicated the low to mid 60 range. However, we were hit with high 70's/low 80's. It was lovely and everyone up there said that they were enjoying the summer that they never had. However, we were dressed totally inappropriately and would rather have packed different clothing. Guess that we should have called the hotel before we left.

I'm back - One more thing to add about Katy's Place in Carmel -- If you are a breakfast hound, this is the place. I was just looking over their take-home menu and what variety!!! Actually, there are 13 different eggs benedict dishes; each with THREE eggs. It was a perfect split for my husband and myself as one for me with the potatoes and fresh fruit was more than enough. The remainder of the EXTENSIVE menus includes omelettes, cereals, pastries, waffles, French toast, buttermilk pancake, and specialty selections; each category having a list below it. They also serve lunch, but breakfast is served until closing at 2 p.m. We REALLY enjoyed Katy's Place!!! (Can you tell??)
Enjoy!!!!
Enjoy!!!!

Gotta try KATY'S now. We live in this area. PASSIONFISH is one of our favorite places to go.
NEWS REGARDING THE BATH HOUSE IN PACIFIC GROVE: After 30 years they are closed. They were sued by a lady regarding access under the ADA. This same lady sued all restaurants in PG. The BATH HOUSE could not afford the cost to rebuild to ADA specs so they closed on November 5. The city of PG owns the building and is trying to find someone to take over the business. A few other family owned places will also soon close.

Sorry, you are correct. That means that many more places will probably close in the next few years. This is a great way to handle this: Make sure no one has a restaurant to go to and make the lawyers rich.

Isn't that the truth? I have a few choice words I'd love to post but my post would be zapped if I posted them.
Just had dinner at the Whaling Station last night (recommended by a constantly ***redundant-wannabe-poster***). It was very average, as it was last time we were there.
