Way Down Yonder in New Orleans Restaurants
 

Just back from Old England and will quickly turn around for a short business trip to New Orleans next week. If I can stay out of the ER (something that unfortunately happens a little too often lately on business trips), I was wondering if you guys could come up with a few restaurant options that won't break the bank (our company only consists of two people, so our expense account really is OUR expense account).

Mu business partner booked us an apartment on Royal Street near Brennan's and the Supreme Court Building. Looking for French, Italian or Cajun places with entrees about 30 bucks (although I could be talked into higher if the restaurant was really, really worth it).

This doesn't meet your cost threshold (it's a mere fraction of your budget). Go anytime, but specifically for breakfast where the praline bacon is a revelation (and hopefully won't send you the the ER...). Use the savings to pay for the taxi there and back (about 5 minutes from the FQ).

An easy walk along the river from the FQ to the convention center neighborhood. My vote for the BEST (bonus - under your budget). Make a reservation and split a Ceviche Tasting with your partner. Then get yourself the Gambas Al Ajillo and don't share it (you wouldn't anyway after your first bite).

And you know about Cafe du Monde for beignets? Just don't inhale when you bite into all that powdered sugar.

consider SoBou, Muriel's, Red Gravy (breakfast) - all good and none of them broke the bank. My notes indicate that I thought Muriel's was a good value. As for the more expensive places - Galatoire's was a classic and Bayona's main courses were yummy and ran $28-32 last fall.

We are in NOLA now. So far we had a great dinner at Dominica on Barronne. Wonderful Italian...but very noisy. Last night it was La Petite Grocery on Magazine. Excellent! Tonight GW Fins. Then SoBou and finally Bayona before heading home. Had a great low brow lunch at Camillia Grill.

Due to scheduling difficulties, I had to take Rio Mar off the list. I did have three great meals while in New Orleans. I highly recommend all three.

Dinner in the courtyard at Cafe Amelie (912 Royal Street) was delicious. Great lamb shank on a bed of grits and a Pumpkin Curry soup that I will try to replicate at home. Perhaps the best bowl of soup I have ever tasted. Great for a romantic meal (sadly I was with my business partner).

Terrific lunch at Muriel's Jackson Square (801 Chartres Street). Wonderful Spinach and Pear Salad with sweet onion, walnuts, smoked bleu cheese and a sugar cane vinaigrette. Main course was Wood Grilled Petite Filet (medium rare) and Shrimp with mashed potatoes, haricots verts and bearnaise sauce. Everything was done perfectly, and the service was impeccable...professional and personable.

My final meal was at Domenica (123 Baronne Street in the Roosevelt Hotel). Main dish was a perfectly cooked Sweet Corn and Louisiana Shrimp Risotto. Finished off with Warm Apple "Spongata"...honey, spice & creole cream cheese. It was like starting to eat an apple pie that then transforms itself into a sort of bread pudding. Unique and Excellent. Restaurant was noisy, but certainly the noise level was tolerable. I happen to like a happening place.

All in all, my best meals ever on a business trip!
