Waterville Maine, and environs - drive up from Portland

Hi all

for anyone who has visited this area, how do you like it, in mid-October? Is the drive up from Portland, and the general area, simply lovely in mid-October, or what?

we're looking for a nice fall weekend in Maine, fly into Portland, head north. Mostly just leaf viewing and hiking.

any suggestions? We'll probably make Waterville the base for the evening.

thanks!!

I think the foliage will be at its peak in mid-October. However, Waterville would not be my first choice of Maine towns to stay in unless you are visiting someone at Colby College. The drive up the interstate from Portland will be dull - I have done it many times. Waterville is kind of an old papermill town where the center of action is the bar at the Holiday Inn. On the positive side, it won't cost you an arm and a leg to stay there or at the Hampton Inn. I would look at towns closer to the coast and possibly south of Portland if you can afford it - really depends on where you plan to hike.

Get a map and take the back roads.Stay in the Belgrade Lakes area. There should still be rooms available.
Good hiking in the area plus some great vistas.Waterville is a short drive away for Colby. An hour pluss up Rt 27 is Sugerloaf. An hour plus down Rt.27 is Boothbay Harbor.

thank you! this is just a spontaneous thought for this fall, I thought Maine would be pretty and we could fly to Portland, drive to Bangor, and stay somewhere in b/w. and hike and take pictures of course.

dunno if we will do this for sure though. still working on Martha's Vineyard too!

Belgrade Lakes area can be stunning at this time of year....Wings Hill Inn is nice. This is just 15-20min from Waterville. I think most of the smaller cottage type accomodations are closed by mid October. Depending on what city you're coming from, you might find a decent flight plan INTO Portland and OUT OF Bangor...this would be ideal. You would then have time to stay/hike around the Moosehead Lake area about 1.5 hours north of Bangor. There are several places to stay near Greenville and Rockwood.
