The best gift shop in DC (IMHO) is in the Building Museum. Every museum has its own gift shop, of course and the one at the Lincoln Memorial has a good selection of Lincoln mementoes. DC's Chinatown in tiny, it doesn't have the kind of shopping you'd find in NYC or on the west coast.

Anonymous, you are so right. I was just at the building museum yesterday and did a little shopping. Some of the best "stocking stuffers" for adults I have ever seen.
Other great shopping areas are Georgetown for chain stores and some interesting independents. I love Paper Source there. Connecticut ave for some cool shops and Burberry down past Dupont Circle. I have heard that U st has good shops but I haven't been.
